Cat Ladies (2009)

[TRAILER] Documentary filmmaker Christie Callan-Jones interviews four women whose lives and self-worth are tied together with their cats.
This is one that didn't make the cut for paduasoy's sponsored list yesterday, both because it contains a scene where a shelter is found to have dead kittens and because the tone wobbles a bit between simply observing and having a laugh at someone's expense.
This is maybe a bit miscast as "A real look at cat ladies" and is closer to something like Chris Smith's Home Movie in tone. That is, it's a look at four people who share a central trait in common, but are, to varying degrees, eccentric, if not weird. Callan-Jones is looking at four particular voices on a spectrum of "cat ladyness" to see what she can learn about something more universal. Her editing betrays her as actually snickering at the subjects sometimes, as opposed to Smith's sphinx-like dryness, so I am not sure how well it will land for people who can see themselves in this archetype.
So I am not sure if this is a legit recommendation for cat lovers. But if you enjoy documentaries about unusual people, there is some indelibly weird humanity here. The German lady is... something else.
Currently streaming in the US on Tubi and Plex. JustWatch listing.
