That incompetence ranking is tough but fair, and hilarious.

I was distracted by the Frenchness of this episode but it really was a dumb idea to go off alone again!

And 100% on brand for River.

River's capacity to fall out of one frying pan and into another is impressive. Another great episode!

i would just like to state for the record that despite my surname i am almost certainly a real person and probably not a cold body from the tail end of the cold war

river is dumb as hell. you’re supposed to stake a place out, watch it for a while, figure out what’s going on not just walk right into the french mansion of death

That’s what I love about River’s characterization. In any other show, he would be the heroic lead. Slow Horses utterly delights in showing what we often consider heroic is deeply, deeply stupid.

I'm intrigued, also, by what is up with the new office manager after Lamb's super weird non-lunch with her.

Oh my god, of COURSE Lamb’s text didn’t say River was dead. The look on everyone’s faces as they gradually realized what was going on was freaking hilarious.

I loved the bus ride meeting. I keep forgetting how funny this show actually is under all the intrigue and drama.

Really enjoyed the French location. I've driven through so many villages like that, empty, overbuilt, vaguely hostile. The cafe in the town square is usually intimidating.

Sufficient skill to be able to order a café au lait in the hostile White Russian bar; sufficient discernment not to drink it. The chateau looked intriguing in the moments before it was burnt to the ground.

I always have opinions like this when I'm watching spy shows, and I certainly did here -- but then I reminded myself that the whole point of this show is that these people are bad at their jobs.

I assume there was a lot of CGI but the scene where River gets into the jeep and escapes the fire was beautifully filmed.

Number Six: Where am I?
Number Two: In the Village.
Number Six: What do you want?
Number Two: Information.
Number Six: Whose side are you on?
Number Two: That would be telling. We want information… information… information.
Number Six: You won't get it.
Number Two: By hook or by crook, we will.
Number Six: Who are you?
Number Two: The new Number Two.
Number Six: Who is Number One?
Number Two: You are, Number Six.
Number Six: I am not a number! I am a free man!
Number Two: [laughs]

I'm working my way through this season a little late...it's the first one where I haven't read the book in advance, and I'm enjoying truly not knowing what's going to happen.

I reminded myself that the whole point of this show is that these people are bad at their jobs.

Along these lines, it's so natural to side with Diana over her soppy new first in command, if only on the basis that she's Kristin Scott Thomas, that it took a moment to remember that not only are her motivations objectively bad, she herself is also demonstrably something less than a paragon of competence. (Not that I am ruling out the new guy being worse on both fronts.)
