Turns out I'm only mostly watching these films in order because this is the 7th film in the series, not the 6th. I'll have to double back to watch The Curse of Michael Myers though, based off the ratings, I won't expect greatness.
On reflection, this one feels very 90s (maybe it's the setting with all the students and/or the winks at the audience, and LL Cool J's character feels like he was pasted in from a script for a different film), but it still strikes me as one of the stronger efforts in the series.

3 is fantastic movie tho really shouldn't even be a Halloween series movie... I'm sure there's a story there of needing a name to get it made

Mental Floss: 18 Surprising Facts About ‘Halloween III: Season of the Witch’
Short version - the studio wanted more John Carpenter Halloween films, he was busy with The Thing and not interested until the studio threw a bunch of money at him to produce without having to write or direct, and part of him producing was coming up with the plan that the "Halloween" series would be more of an anthology, different stories and different writers and directors for each film.
Halloween 3 getting critically panned (at the time) and doing poorly at the box office killed the anthology idea.
