Community: Lawnmower Maintenance and Postnatal Care
March 17, 2015 4:31 PM - Season 6, Episode 2 - Subscribe

When Dean Pelton buys an elaborate '90s virtual-reality rig for the school, he soon goes mad with newfound godlike power. Unbeknownst to Britta, Annie and Abed reach out to her estranged parents (special guest stars Martin Mull & Lesley Ann Warren). Also, Chang is bitten by a cat.

WATCHING: Don't look for it in your local listings! New episodes are posted every Tuesday on Yahoo Screen. For non-browser viewing, the official Screen app is available on iOS, Android, Roku, AppleTV, Chromecast, XBox 360/One, and probably a few other platforms I didn't think of.

"I wanted a Murphy bed for shenanigans, but the cost of shenanigans to cost ratio was too high."
"What's so funny? I mean, besides everything."
"You're not the new Annie. You're the new Abed."
"They're file folders. Stop calling them worlds."
"You keep white Morpheus inside the Matrix."
"I just found out Annie and Abed have been cheating on me with my parents."
"You know my parents? Since when?" "I don't know when, since thousands of dollars ago?"
"What were you rebelling against? Generosity?"
"The problem is to make a copy of a file, you have to throw a fireball at it."
"We send you a birthday card in New York and next week you're setting fire to a Jamba Juice in San Jose."
"He joked about having a pee jar earlier, and it's gradually becoming less of a joke."
"How long has he been in there?" "Four hours." "I was thinking years. This guy runs your school?"
"The sadder reality, the less reality you want." HEAR HEAR.
"He'll be back to his old self in an hour." "Do you have a way to fix that?"
"All that matters is we're going to die!"
"It's the Greendale effect."... "I'll never get out of here, will I?" "I haven't met many who do."

Another spinoff: Hard Drive and Wing Man.
On the bad side, poor Ken Jeong because literally, they could not think of anything to do with him to keep him a regular.

I thought the joke was that didn't know what to do with him and despite being in the group finally, he still doesn't fit in the group.

As much as I loved the Hard Drive and Wing Man freeze frame, it felt just a tadbit over the top. Like, this is a weird reality, but it's still a reality (viz. Winger yelling at Troy and Abed about how Troy and Abed in the Morning isn't a real show and they're just sitting there talking to no one).

But all in all, I'm glad Community is back. Thank you, Yahoo.

The whole time Patashnik was bragging about virtual godhood and worlds within worlds, I mentally added the word "Morty" to every sentence, along with the occasional burp.

It's about time someone finally did a parody of Lawnmower Man. I've been waiting for that since I saw it in the theater in 1992.

%n: "The whole time Patashnik was bragging about virtual godhood and worlds within worlds, I mentally added the word "Morty" to every sentence, along with the occasional burp."

In a similar way, Britta's "All that matters is we're going to die!" had some Rick and Morty ring to it, for me.

And I just don't know about these two episodes.
As much as I want to love everything Community and laugh out loud more often than the occassional chuckle, it just feels a bit tired to me. More tired than season 5, which left me with the impression that Dan Harmon's heart was with Rick and Morty instead at the time.

Please tell me this isn't just me growing old and bitter. :(

WHY ARE NONE OF YOU TALKING ABOUT ROB SCHRAB'S PORTUGUESE GREMLINS TRAILER AT THE END OF THE EPISODE!?

Knee-high mischiefs!

So, SO much love for the Lawnmower Dean. Jesus wept.

Oh man, I was very into Lawnmower Man when I was younger. So 90s! So ultimately disappointing!

And also one of the only movies I ever bought on Laserdisc.

But yet, such a weird target for satire. The whole riff seemed to be "Hey, Oculus Rift is a thing. Let's make jokes about how it... how, um... Okay, we don't actually have much to say about it. But, man, that VR scene in Jurassic Park sure looks silly in hindsight!"

All was redeemed by Britta's low-speed getaway, though, and Abed's fixation on the Green Machine.

The VR riffing worked for me since I remember both the Second Life hype bubble and watching Johnny Quest delete files in VR by firing rockets from a jet plane.( Also, I'm hoping that more people than just me thought of "White Morpheus" as a riff on "Black Orpheus"...)

That was really kinda sweet and sad when Britta tried the Troy chest pat with Abed and Britta'd it. (I miss Troy!)

Also, Britta has Colonel Mustard and Miss Scarlet as parents because OF COURSE.

Oh okay I definitely didn't get all the references but the VR was such a 90's throwback. Britta's parents were *perfect* too.

I'm really liking Frankie, her deadpan is a good balance to the absurdity.

The last season will just be Chang wandering the halls, all alone.

Did you have serious troubles? It was a bit weird connecting on a Roku but sorted itself out.
posted by Going To Maine at 9:40 AM on March 20, 2015 [1 favorite]

Yup. Netflix and Hulu work fine, but YS was stutter city throughout.

Oh funny I had actually no problems with Yahoo Screen on my Apple TV. Hulu on the other hand is such a mess. Sometimes show audio plays over ads, or vice versa.

(Good use of "Britta" though.)

Speaking of Apple TV I am excited for their supposed upcoming announcement. Maybe the newest version will allow you to listen through headphones, which would resolve a lot of arguments in my tiny apartment.

I had so many problems with the Yahoo Screen player (on Chrome on Windows 7). It actually skipped the intro of each episode, so that I had to manually click as close to 0:00 as possible to actually see the introductory scenes. Also, it randomly skipped 3-5 seconds ahead at random times, causing me to wonder "wait, what are they talking about?". This, in addition to the more typical stuttery problems I experienced, really make me hope they sort things out before the next episode or batch of episodes.
posted by destructive cactus at 1:43 PM on March 20, 2015

I used the Yahoo Screen player through Roku, and while it sometimes took a short wait to buffer or something at the beginning, it generally did the job pretty well. I think it paused on me maybe once or twice during the viewing.

In truth, I was distracted more by the different lighting in use in some scenes than how well the Yahoo Screen worked.
posted by Atreides at 1:59 PM on March 20, 2015

Huh. I had no troubles with Yahoo Screen via a Roku Streaming Stick. I wonder how much it helped that we weren't using any of our wifi for anything else while it was on.

Ken Jeong will never leave Community.

Patashnik is played by Keith David, who was excellent in last year's short-lived Enlisted. And apparently he also provided the voice-over for the blanket fort episode in Community season 3!

The actual playing worked fine through the Xbox, but I couldn't figure out how to turn on subtitles anywhere and missed far too many jokes. This is a bigger problem with Community than if I'd been watching something else, since every lines is several jokes.

I, for one, am holding out hope that there will be a "They Live" inspired episode. I'm imagining Abed trying to convince Patashnik to put on a pair of glasses.

I was a bit disappointed with the VR plot. No one learned anything about themselves. Except for Keith David's character, whom we will never see again.
posted by Monochrome at 5:44 AM on March 29, 2015

Nope! Keith David is a new member of the central cast.
posted by Going To Maine at 6:18 AM on March 29, 2015

Whoops. But anyway, you could cut the VR plotline and Jeff, Frankie, and even Dean Pelton would be the same.
