Everything Is Stories: 013 Always Keep the Fire Going Somewhere

A story of compassion and saintlike devotion in the streets of New Orleans: B.B. St. Roman is the only staff member for the New Orleans Police Department Homeless Assistant Unit.

Before helping the homeless, she traveled the world, recording sound for documentaries involving shamans, Buddhist monks, and Mother Teresa. And at one point, she became the tour manager for Dr. John, Louisiana musician and legend.

Now, she works full-time with the homeless. She tells her stories of Hurricane Katrina, shelter issues in the city, as well as planning and dreaming of ways to help those living in the streets.

Music by Holy Gallows. Produced by Garrett Crowe, Mike Martinez, and Tyler Wray

In related media, here's a TEDx Talk by St. Roman.

A touching episode, and someone who's lived a hardcore life. A bit more of an open-ended series of events than some of the episodes, which makes it a bit more blah, but an impressive person.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I had never heard of this podcast and now I've subscribed. St Roman is a really interesting character and articulates her thoughts and work in a matter of fact but moving way. I do very similar work and it is super validating and helpful to hear her story.

Yeah, it updates pretty rarely but all of the episodes are quite solid, sideways profiles of people who have led slightly sideways lives.
