Apparently there was originally a different version of this story that included Choose Goose.

The use of the line "Slay this non-aligned ant!" was the clincher that proved to me that at least one person behind the scenes of "Adventure Time" was into Dungeons & Dragons, because that's the only context I know of in which questions of moral positioning are denoted by the word "alignment".

I thought Finn's nervousness upon discovering that the book covered romance with princesses in its curriculum was funny, very true to early adolescence.

This was the first episode of Adventure Time I ever saw, and it still ranks in my top five. The bits with the Gatekeeper are some of the best physical comedy this show has ever done, and I have been waiting with rapidly diminishing patience for the return of Mannish Man the Manly Minotaur.

This is one of the first episodes I saw too, and is still one of my favourites. It was the first that I really 'got' adventure time. The childish interpretation/subversion of classic fantasy tropes in this episode is fantastic. The last few minutes always has me in fits of giggles.

Oh, also, discussion point: I was having a conversation with a couple of friends the other day (who are really, massively into the show) about the best episodes to use to introduce people to adventure time. This episode came up a lot, as did a lot of the early ice king ones, but we couldn't come up with anything definitive. Any thoughts?

Personally, I'd stay away from the Ice King ones (except maybe Nice King?). So much season 1 stuff would work though. Enchiridion, Dungeon, Business Time, City of Thieves, or the one I've probably seen the most, Wizard.

I usually start people with Memories of Boom Boom Mountain, because it is both hilarious and also sets the weirdness bar high enough that if they enjoy the episode there's a pretty good chance that nothing else in the series will bother them.
