Garnet, you sly dog. Still, I think the idea that Gems are not good for Beach City in the long run might become A Thing for Steven at some point.

I have a little trouble with Ronaldo as a character, because he is mostly so pathetic and doomed. The only time he had any dignity was in the Horror Club episode, when Lars was clearly the bigger jerk and Ronaldo showed some glimmers of competence. I guess I wish we saw that more often, otherwise he just seems too much of a one-note sad sack.

My favorite part was the Mayor Dewey (Mayor Dewey) chyron above the Mayor Dewey nameplate.

Proof that Steven lives in a better world than this one: his YouTube has a "hate" button. Not thumbs down, hate.

I too am hoping for Ronaldo to have an overall arc, either good or bad. His episodes so far haven't been my favorite, but I think that's because he's been static and doesn't have a whole lot of redeeming qualities. He was a good vehicle to explore how the townspeople feel about the gems and the big hand ship, though.

Favorite detail: Mayor Dewey's nameplate being typeset in Monotype Corsiva, the go-to font for corporate tacky-classy. (The font choices in this episode were excellent overall)

One nice thing about episodes like this is they help remind us that there's a whole world out there besides Steven and the Gems. Keep Beach City Weird tells us that the video was taken down due to copyright infringement. Apparently Ronaldo used commercial music for background without permission! You can cry fair use all you want Ronaldo, TubeTube doesn't care.

Oh, although it was mostly fluffy, we did get some useful information--

- We found out what Beach City citizens think of the Crystal Gems. Sadie probably knows more than any of the others, since she and Lars actually went to a gem location. She said the town was saved by Steven's "family," who keep mostly to themselves.
- We found out that the Gems were there long before Beach City. What caused the townsfolk to settle so near such a strange place? Did Rose maybe have something to do with it?
- We saw our first monster in a long while! One-eyed crabs! Was it a corrupted gem? I didn't see a gem on it, but apparently it has young. Was that a poof off-screen when the fight concluded?
- It was established that the monsters that attack are attracted to the Gems. Why?
- Pearl still has trouble with most human names. "Listen Frybo...."
- The main story-related reason Pearl is reluctant to leave: they'd have to move the bubbles. Nothing about the Crystal Temple?

Oh, here's yet another Tumblr fan comic about Steven's babyhood.

Sorry to be posting a lot, but it's also been mentioned on the sub: Garnet appears to know more about humans than the others? Well at least more than Pearl, she mentions video editing and a few episodes ago community theater.

Okay, ONE more thing. One of Steven Universe's gimmicks is that Steven is the POV character, but this episode plays with that by seeming to make Ronaldo the POV character, it's the fact that, at the end, Steven and the Gems are watching the video that shows us it's still Steven we're watching through.

Also, Steven has a laptop here! Interesting logo on it, like a half-circle.

The last several comments were mine. Well, one more I guess. The newest post on Keep Beach City Weird.

Not that there aren't multiple beach cities with boardwalks in the world, but the fact that Keep Beach City Weird sounds very similar to the Keep Santa Cruz Weird motto that... has kind of petered out at this point, makes me think it's at least partially based on it. If I'd realized this 4 years ago I might have been able to attend this.

Keep Beach City Weird is a riff on quite a few other mottos in quite a few other cities, seeming to have started in Austin, Texas of all places.

I enjoyed this a lot more than "Keep Beach City Weird," because as often-pathetic as Ronaldo is, at least here he's basically telling the truth rather than chasing half-assed conspiracy theories because he prefers them to the truth. Like, everything here was presented in a slanted way, but it was more or less all "accurate" to what happened.

"Gracious Host" was the best chyron, in my opinion.
