WTF with Marc Maron: Episode 617 - Laura Jane Grace
July 8, 2015 1:08 PM - Subscribe

Laura Jane Grace, founder and lead singer of the band Against Me!, tells Marc about her experiences as a trans woman in a punk rock world. Laura tells Marc how she got her start in music, why punk rock was such a natural fit and the many ways her life changed as she transitioned. This episode is sponsored by The Jim Gaffigan Show on TV Land, Casper Mattress and Me Undies.

A funny and very emotional interview with Laura Jane Grace, a rock star who famously came out as a trans woman in 2012.

Watch for feelings:
"My mom has been very supportive," Grace said -- but she hasn't spoken with her dad since coming out. When Maron asked if she wanted that relationship repaired, she said, "I hope, maybe," but is waiting for him to make the next move. "Even though I'm 34 years old, I'm still allowed to be the kid. You come to me."

I personally can't wait until we reach the point that every interview with a transgender person isn't just about being or coming out as trans, but this is a great interview. Marc's general humility (and Laura Jane's own personal education) helps make the discussion accessible for people who don't know trans people or aren't very knowledgeable of the issue.

I got so squirmy towards the end, when he asked her about wearing women's clothing. "Panties is such a gross word," indeed.
