It also does a good job of establishing Marceline's alignment. She's not completely evil, but she won't really go out of her way to help the people who lost their souls.

If my memory isn't misleading me, this is the first episode to feature what becomes a recurring motif for the series: Finn serving as the witness to somebody else's emotional turmoil that he doesn't quite have the maturity to fully grasp yet. I'll keep an eye out and see whether the theme is as prominent as I remember it being.

Including the brief segment that foreshadows the season 6 final: "Of all of history's greatest monsters, you are by far the most evil thing I've encountered. "

I'm so glad they finally had a payoff for that line (and it sort of explains why Hunson was able to suck the souls from the other penguins).
