MeFi Horror Club: Frogs
September 18, 2015 10:04 AM - Subscribe

A wealthy family is menaced during a Fourth of July birthday party by an army of ruthless amphibians, reptiles, and birds.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Samuel Z. Arkoff and American International Pictures, in their own words: "Suppose Nature gave a war, and everybody came? The snakes, the birds, the lizards and frogs. And suppose the polluters, the species on Earth called Man, were the enemy in that war?"

Starring (young, hunky, non-mustachioed) Sam Elliott as the hero, Ray Milland as the evil old crank/serial polluter, and Joan Van Ark as Not Yet Val Ewing. And a whole mess of frogs, snakes, tarantulas, lizards, snapping turtles, and seagulls, all working in a common environment toward a common goal, as such critters so often do in nature. *polite cough* What I'm saying is that you won't have to put cheese on your popcorn, because the movie will more than meet your cheese needs.

Available to view on Youtube, Amazon, and Netflix streaming, which is being persnickety about letting me link to it this morning. Theatrical trailer here; tv trailer here.

*smites forehead* Sentient Spanish moss! How could I have forgotten? That moss really ties the movie together. /rimshot

I remember seeing this one in the video stores all through my childhood. I finally tried to watch it and I just couldn't get all the way through. The whole thing was basically someone's "goofy" dad trying to play along with a four-year-old's prank by waggling the rubber snake at himself and falling off the cough moaning, except for some reason professionally filmed and presumably involving people who were being paid for their time and effort.

Pretty much once you've seen a bunch of lizards kill a guy in a greenhouse by pushing glass jars of chemicals off of high shelves, you've seen the best that Frogs has to offer. Everything else is a letdown by comparison. Even the Spanish moss.
