The incredibly awesome Sheriff Hanscum asks the Winchester boys to help out with a case involving a bunny mask-wearing murderer.

If he was a pedophile I think he would have had less terrifying costumes.

"Worst entertainer ever, traumitised the children, the adults and the family dog."
"I had to mop up the urine of fifteen frightened third graders. Do not reccomend"
"I should have paid a stripper, at least then I'd know he would eventually take the costume off, and would have been more appropriate for children!"
"I'm a demon and I've seen some depraved things, but this one takes the cake!"

I didn't get the impression he was a pedophile really. Just awkward and creepy. And DAMN, that was cold of his sister to send a couple of goons to "scare" him. That's some seriously f-ed up thinking. "I think my brother may be molesting my son, but I'm not sure. So I'll send some goons to dangle him off a bridge!"

Admittedly I've never been in her shoes and maybe somebody will show up and give very good reasons for why we shouldn't judge her. But CHRIST, lady! Ask your brother if he's a molester, before you send the goons! And if you already think he is guilty, call the cops! The goon squad should not even be on the list of options, there!

A surprisingly self-contained MOW, with very little relating to the arc this season. Not complaining though. I am digging the flashback feel, this season.

I was glad to see Sheriff Hanscum again, and if they kill her off they'll have some 'splainin' to do.

I did think the rationale of the sister was a little weak but at the same time, her own quandry of her brother who she had always defended and the safety of her son, played into SPN's constant anvils of family and frequently having to choose between members of the family. I think it's the mark of the series that these themes play heavily into every single episode in one way or another. People don't necessarily make good or even reasonable choices when they are afraid.

All that said, yay for the return of Sheriff Donna and the brief touch on Sam's visions at the end was worth the price of admission.

I was super happy to see Sheriff Donna, for sure, except I felt the light tone of a Donna episode didn't square with the darkness of the central storyline.

Not a terrible episode, but so many things didn't really mesh. I feel child molestation should be off limits for Supernatural. And placing it in a season where a lot of fans were picking on the weird vibe between Dean and child-Darkness was probably not well thought out.

Did I miss an explanation for why his costumes were so damned creepy? Because I don't know why anyone would possibly hire him outside of Halloween. I was waiting for some comment about his ghost spirit transforming changing their appearance once donned.

Sheriff Donna is a good character, but her plot was forced and half baked. Oh? A cop who likes her and has the same name as her terrible ex? Something, something, rawr I can do anything a man can!

- I love that Minnesoooota accent.
- Poor Doug 2
- Sam having to overcome his fear and subdue the clown made me giddy.
- The occasional monster-of-the-week episodes like this one works well, I think, as it gives you a respite from the looming apocalypse of the season and reminds you of the little things that make the brother and the show so enjoyable.
- I <3 Donna with all my <3's

Still wanting a Supernatural spinoff featuring Sheriffs Mills and Hanscum, with Mrs. Tran handling the business and intel stuff. This episode just made it that much clearer that it'd rock.

- Sam having to overcome his fear and subdue the clown made me giddy.

Watching him steel himself to do that was so great.

Oh, yeah. Good point. I hadn't thought of that.

I wonder if coach telling the quarterback to "lay off the human growth hormone" is a dig on Padalecki?

HGH is rampant in Hollywood among actors, especially male ones out of their 20s, as it significantly reduces recovery time and makes recovery a lot more tolerable. It's not a performance enhancing drug, per se, but allows for much more frequent and higher intensity training.

Quotes

Dean: Hey, it's none of our business, but it looks like somebody might have a crush.
Sheriff Donna Hanscum: I was born at night, Dean. Not last night.
Sam: What's the deal? He seems nice.
Sheriff Donna Hanscum: He is! But he's a cop... named Doug. I mean, clearly, I have a type. But no, thank you, ma'am. Won't be once bitten, twice Doug'd.

Trivia

The rock star aliases Sam and Dean use in this episode, Elliott and Savage, are a reference to Def Leppard members Joe Elliott and Rick Savage

Dean references Looney Tunes twice in this episode; first when he refers to the man in the bunny mask as a "wascally wabbit" like Elmer Fudd, and again when he says, "What's up, Doc?" to the bunny mask, like Bugs Bunny. Sam references Who Framed Roger Rabbit in the same conversation by calling the bunny man Rog and saying, "I was framed!"

When Donna calls Dean, his response is, "What do you mean killer bunny?" This is a reference to the killer bunny in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

When Sam and Dean are at Rita's house and she shows them a picture of Chester in a clown outfit, Sam gets nervous and quickly hands the picture to Dean. This is due to Sam's well established fear of clowns.

Cottage Grove, MN is in Washington County, not Larsen County as the sheriff's building suggests. Also Cottage Grove doesn't have a sheriff.

At 14:23, we see a wall hanging that reads as, "Cottage Grove High Court Jesters". There is no Cottage Grove High School. There is, however, a Cottage Grove Elementary School and a Cottage Grove Middle School, but no high school. Students in Washington County go to several different high schools.

At 8:09, the man in the bunny mask has on a T-shirt that reads "MINNESOTA TECH". There is no such campus located anywhere in Minnesota. There are, however, many Technical Colleges in Minnesota and the closest one to Cottage Grove would be ITT.

The Supernatural costuming department did very well at coming up with remarkably creepy costumes. The fact that each costumed killer remained absolutely silent added to the effect.
