MeFi Horror Club #10: One Hour Photo
August 11, 2014 9:09 PM - Subscribe

We've already agreed in principle on adding a "Crossover" category to the rotation for Horror Club, a category that would include scary science fiction, thrillers, etc. Since there wasn't much steam building for any particular film for the scheduled "retro" pick for week 10, and since the world just lost Robin Williams, I'm going to invoke my benevolent dictator powers. Week 10 will now be the debut for "Crossover" as a rotation slot, and the first pick will be Mark Romanek's film One Hour Photo.

This stalker thriller features Williams as an employee of a one-hour photo lab who becomes obsessed with a young suburban family.

It is available for digital rental through Amazon, YouTube, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.

Awesome pick. One of my favorite movies of the 2000s. Robin Williams is absolutely perfect.

It's been a while since I've seen this, but it was pretty creepy, as a proper sort of thriller, without any real violence or gore. Here's the Wikipedia page with a plot summary, if you want that sort of thing, but if not, I'll link to Rotten Tomatoes, where it's rated 81% fresh, though MetaCritic aggregated 64% approval. Wikipedia notes that Trent Reznor produced a soundtrack that got scrapped, but parts were worked into Still (album on YouTube; info on NIN.com), and cites the movie commentary by Romanek, where he said he was partially inspired by the films of 'lonely men' from the 1970s, notably Taxi Driver.

This was the second (or third) date for Blondie and I. I enjoyed it thoroughly but now understand it was not an appropriate date movie so early in a relationship.

Actually, I understood that right after the movie when she told me in a mockingly funny way (she still married me).
