The Magicians: Have You Brought Me Little Cakes? Show Only

The gang is in Fillory, where things get weird. And violent. And there are a lot of flashbacks, some of which are really unpleasant. [Season finale]
Well, fuck me.

Is the rape & violence in the books at this same level of gruesomeness generally?
I don't think this counts as spoilers so, basically, yes. It's not quite as gory (by which I mean the text descriptions don't dwell on blood and such the way the TV visuals do), but it's just as brutal.

And it being a book adaptation means there's little to be gained in speculating on what will happen next, as one normally does with cliffhangers.
By this point, the show has diverged sufficiently from the books that large swathes of the plot are up in the air for everyone.

Since we have some book people in here, did anyone notice the beast has 6 fingers? I was wondering since magic is so much about using hand gestures if the 6th finger was part of what made him a master magician. A little enhancement to make his magic more powerful as I don't believe Martin has six fingers although it's possible I simply didn't notice.

I need to look more closely, but I thought the whole "six fingers" thing came up from when Quentin saw Plover learning about advanced magic:
"Oh, I have the best news. I am so close to figuring it all out. Wild magic, too strong to do with human hands. I'd have to grow another finger." (Transcript of The Writing Room, episode 9).
Skimming through the Google books search results for the second and third book, I came across this reference to Martin having more fingers, from book 3:
“... What’s Martin Chatwin got that the three of us don’t have?”
“Like about six more fingers,” Josh said. “For starters.”
I rather forgot that bit, so maybe I'll let others dig into the show vs book parallels and divergences regarding the number of fingers on the hands of The Beast/Martin.

The Beast had 6 fingers in the pilot; there was a closeup of his hand when he took over the classroom. Whether Martin did in the finale, I didn't notice.

Martin had six fingers in the finale as well.

This was a very satisfactory episode. Jules goes through hell, comes out stronger (god I hope I have that right - that she is stronger) and takes the story in an unexpected direction.
Very satisfying. Now I just have to decide if I'm going to read the books or not as I gather the disparity between the two is growing.

a production error: They didn't know that Umber was dead, but I spotted "Umber's grave" marked on the map under the table they drew as kids.

good god the misogyny in this show is staggering. I've hand-waved it away because i'm magic school trash, but this episode may have been the last straw

Not sure what I think about this finale. I was forewarned by a tumblr post that there was rape, though I hadn't clicked through the post to get the specifics, I'm glad I didn't stumble into it completely blind.
It's definitely unsatisfying in the way that all cliffhangers are. And it being a book adaptation means there's little to be gained in speculating on what will happen next, as one normally does with cliffhangers. All I can do now is decide whether or not the show has interested me enough to read the books during the wait for season 2. Is the rape & violence in the books at this same level of gruesomeness generally?
