Oh look, it's the "pass the cross around game, to try and make people guess who dies"

Daisy is having a very bad day. But whoot, she can't be reinfected!

Daiys is sad

SHIELD agents as literal dummies!

That doctor will agree to learn anything when death is the only other option!

Daisy is really sad

Hive's actually appearance is pretty cool! Too bad it blows the special effects budget.

Techno babble talk

Daisy is really, really sad and will do something about it!

No, Lincoln will!

Best scene, hands down, Lincoln and Hive just watching the Earth and talking. Seriously, that could have been the last half hour or so.

Post Scenes:

Who's the Director now?

WHERE'S MAY?!

Oh hey, Daisy does more neat things.

WHERE'S MAY?!

WHERE'S BOBBIE AND HUNTER?!

Not that I am bitter about things.

So, here's what I don't get. Even when there's no one left to convince, Hive is still saying that he just wanted to bring peace. He really thinks he's a good guy.

But didn't he turn the last planet from a paradise to a dusty wasteland? How does that add up?

It was so cool and validating when Samuel L. Jackson showed up at the end of Season 1. Now that two more seasons have gone by, I feel sure that nothing like that will happen again for this series.

Just me, but labelling it: 21/22 would help.
But I started watching 22, not realising there was a 21, so: bitter.

Well, there was peace, technically.

Though him saying he just wanted a connection also seemed odd. Dude, stop killing people, then you can connect with them! Haven't you figured that out after thousands of years?!

The writing was really bizarre this season and just seemed to forget previous stories or just make shit up on the spot for plot reasons.

I was rooting for Daisy to die, so May and Bobbie could have more screen time.

Love that May gets conked on the head by telekinesis guy just before she gets all sappy with Daisy. Very appropriate.

Don't forget Sif and Maria Hill.

What I don't get is why the cameos dried up. Would it kill them to have a second tier character show up every so often? AOS isn't a terrible show anymore, and it keeps folks tied in to the MCU. Is TV still irredeemably second-tier, so that none of the movie folks will dare sully their names with it? Why not have one of the Netflix folk pop up?
posted by leotrotsky at 8:14 AM on May 18, 2016 [1 favorite]

SHIELD and the Netflix shows should totally touch bases every now and then. The movie people don't show up because of money, they're much more expensive, but one or two a season would make sense. Hell, just have Banner stop by as a doctor, no Hulk, but of course everyone is worried about keeping him calm, so he doesn't Hulk out. Potential comedy gold!

There's also been the excuse that the movies are done so far in advance, it would be hard to match up them up with what's going on in the tv shows, but that's bullshit. Everyone knows what sort of role SHIELD fulfills, they could have appeared in Civil War during a phone call as Stark and/or Ross are hunting for Cap&Friends.

Stark: "Hey, Cap is on the run, so if you see him, you call us, no maybes"

Coulson: "Oh yeah, when the formost patriotic soldier drops by because he doesn't believe in you should be looking over his shoulder Mr. Stark, you'll be first person we call."

Stark: I liked you better when you were dead. By the way, you ever going to tell us why you aren't?

Coulson: Woah, gotta another call on the line, maybe's Cap? Gotta go!

IIRC, RDJ has said he's willing to guest on AoS, but he didn't specify whether he was willing to guest for less than the entirely season's budget.

Love that May gets conked on the head by telekinesis guy just before she gets all sappy with Daisy.

That was something like the second or third little subversion by that point. I was enjoying them.

I have to say, I also - to my surprise - didn't mind the cross passing stuff. Which at first I was a little shocked by, since I was so filled with disgust with how they have been beating that drum for, what, a month now? I'll cut them a bit of a break on that since it's not entirely in their control how stuff is cut into promos, but mostly I still hang it on them for a lazy device to (try to) create tension.

But I realized why I didn't mind it in the episode: because now it's just an hour or so and, more importantly, it relates to an actual character's emotional reaction. Now it's not about an entirely outside-the-show unearned tension, it's character emotions and in-show consequences. Daisy viewing it both as a prophecy and an excuse? That worked really well for me.

I also liked her attempt at getting back into the fold. I didn't see it coming in the moment and it happened soon enough and while she was raw enough that I might believe she'd do something that would have such an awful result. My only complaint with it is that the nicely subtle bit of Lincoln saying "I know what you were doing," with a good delivery that wasn't too judgemental or forgiving, left a lot of stuff unutilized. That's a pretty huge personal shame to shoulder and every outward behavior from her was about not wanting to have to live what what she'd done prior, not what she was willing to do to get that feeling back.

That said, I really hope next season has her as a more intermittent player. The idea that we might be doing another let's go get Skye/Daisy run of episodes? Come on. You fetched her from Inhuman Tibet, you got her back from Hive, at some point just accept someone's resignation.

Personally I liked how Lincoln and Hive just sorta floated together companionably as the timer ticked down. Sure you're mortal enemies but when its clear that its inevitable you're both going to die what's the point of going out futilely pummeling at each other. Hell, I'm surprised they didn't hug it out.

I liked the shell game with the cross and that Fitz and Simmons made it through the finale undamaged. My guess is that either Talbot or May are the director at this point. This is the first season finale that didn't end with a cliff hanger so I wonder if they're on the fence about continuing it next season.

Which she threw down, as soon as the fight was over.

ok, I'm not ashamed to admit it cried like a baby when Lincoln died.

I cheered.
In part, because I was right and of course the white guy bought it, but mostly because all the tears and sappy talk just dragged.

What I don't get is why the cameos dried up.

Marvel Film is a different division now, and for some reason doesn't want to acknowledge the TV series.
Chloe Bennett was complaining about it recently.

I have two questions:

What was with the opening scene "we're still on Earth"?

Why has no one praised John Hannah in this doubt episode? He was great AND we'll see him next year.

waiit... Why did Mac build a Shotgun/Axe and then use it as neither shotgun or axe?

Okay, one more question:
Why is no one squeeing over the LMD?
This changes EVERYTHING.
I mean, we could get Zodiac! Dum Dum Duggan! Um.... Lincoln 2.0? WARD 2.0.
posted by Mezentian at 4:13 AM on May 19, 2016 [1 favorite]

I'm leery over the LMD, as it sounds like a too easy plot crutch. "Omg Daisy is dead! Oh it was just an LMD" Rinse, Repeat.

Please, no more Lincoln or Ward.

What was with the opening scene "we're still on Earth"?

I think that was all part of Daisy's mental mess of guilt over her actions while in alliance to Hive and shame about wanting to go back anyways. She knew what his actions had caused in the past and what his new plan would likely eventually result in. She'd willingly done things to help it happen and at that point it might still have come to pass. And yet a sizable part of her wanted to go back and feel that connection, even if it meant the end of the world. Seems like a reasonable nightmare in light of that.

I liked it. I wasn't sure I would: this season has been a bit frustrating. Most of what I thought has already been gone over, but being a little redundant anyway:

* I appreciated that Daisy wanted back in with Hive. That wasn't the only good way they could've gone with that, but I loved that she wasn't instantly over it, and it lent her following rage a lot of weight for me.

* Lincoln and Hive just chilling in their last minute together was a nice way to end that plot. I appreciate that, at the end of the day, Hive was sincere. In this episode, he really reminded me of Jasmine from Angel: 'All I wanted was for everybody to love me forever and to eat some people, why does everyone hate me?' (His brief discussion of the aliens on the blue planet had shades of Jasmine's reaction to the bug people, too - like, 'beta testing! don't look at me like that!')

* I hope the LMDs aren't a cheap copout because I *am* enjoying the good doctor, and absolutely loved him here. 'Science hunch' is going in my vocabulary. (Much as I have come to love Brett Dalton's work, I will be upset if they use this to bring back Ward as a third distinct villain.)

* Shotgun ax!

* Fitz and Simmons were truly great here, both together and apart.

* I agree with the sentiment that, at some point, SHIELD should accept Daisy's resignation.

I squeed over LMDs. And their new Mad Scientist (who killed it this whole episode) suggested he was making a body for his disembodied female computer voice, so that suggests that at least his first LMD is female? Not sure who that'd be, though. (My it's-never-ever-gonna-happen fantasy: LMD of Peggy Carter. Then give us at least one Chris Evans as Cap guest spot, where he has to deal with the LMD.)

Also, fwiw, this article detailing how sad the rest of the cast was to lose Brett Dalton and Luke Mitchell does make it sound like LMDs will not be a cheap way to bring Ward (or Lincoln) back.

The shotgun ax was great, though I too was a little annoyed that it was primarily used as an over-glorified baseball bat. Just one of those concessions we make for network tv, I guess.

And add me to the list of people who are really frustrated by how the initial promise of a totally-interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe has dried up to be replaced with almost completely compartmentalized Network TV/Netflix/Movies divisions.

Yeah, that's an excellent observation, I didn't mind it here either and I think you've nailed why. The fact that it wasn't just a meta-textual bit of lazy cheap suspense building, but the characters themselves were aware of the "prophecy" and could react to it in different ways really made that device finally click for me.

And that final scene that Lincoln and Ward had was really excellent. I liked that they gave the finale two hours, it gave them time to let scenes like that one breathe a bit instead of feeling rushed or shortchanged.

Also I'm really enjoying the self-awareness on display in these post-mortem interviews:

At the same time, given Ward’s death in the midseason finale, did you feel like you had to kill Hive?
BELL: Yeah, the question is…
TANCHAROEN: Where do you go from here when he is the ultimate evil? We were basically saying he is the incarnation of the first evil.
BELL: Unless they wake up from a dream…
TANCHAROEN: Yeah, if we were to try to continue his arc, there will be many people who are like, “Come on guys, let go already.”

Given that Ward did die in the midseason finale, and then you came back as Hive, do you think he had to die at this point?
[DALTON]: That was my fear when they gave me the part, actually. As with Ward, too. Once I killed Rosalind, I thought, “Man, his days are numbered. How much longer can S.H.I.E.L.D. stand me picking these people off?”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you get an early sense that Lincoln would get killed off?
LUKE MITCHELL:When they had initially revealed that someone is going to die, I was like, “That’s a really cool twist.” Part of me was like, “But it’ll probably end up being [someone random].” Then I was like, “Actually, no, maybe it is going to be something big.” That would be a really cool season-ending thing if it was one of the main cast, because that hasn’t really happened. Ward kind of died, but Brett stayed on the show, therefore you’re not losing an actor. Then I was like, “Well, they’re not going to kill off any of the originals. That’s the show. That’s what the core of the show is.”

Then I started thinking about the peripherals around the core members, which I consider myself to be one of the peripheral characters because I came in late in the game. I was like, “Well, they’re not going to kill Yo-Yo because that would be too obvious because it’s her necklace. She’s awesome and she’s a comic book character who they’ve just introduced and barely used.” Then I was like, “Joey, would they kill Joey off? He’s not a comic book character. No, he’s Latino and he’s gay, they better not kill him off.” Then all of a sudden I’m like, “I think it could be me, straight white guy.”

Thanks for that. I feel for those guys. (I've been rooting for Dalton to hit it big since Ward turned evil - the whole thing with Ward was totally shades of Anna Torv on Fringe. Like... 'whoa, that person is actually super talented, but you need to stick around awhile to find out.' I'll be interested in whatever his next project is for sure, just glad SHIELD isn't afraid to kill at least a few of its darlings.)

Somewhere, Reb Brown and Rex Smith looks wistfully to the sunset and sigh.

Eric Allan Kramer just hammers in another nail.

But, I think, having read about how Supergirl, Arrow, Flash and Legends are crossing over on the CW makes it pretty clear Marvel seems afraid to dip into the rich pool of characters it still owns and have some more fun with SHIELD.

I don't really need SHIELD and the MCU to be totally connected, I get that it's logistically difficult, but it's not impossible to get a tiny crossover now and then, is it?
