Luke Cage: Manifest

Mariah's political career comes under fire, and Cottonmouth picks up information that could put Luke on the run.

AV Club binge recap - Family comes first on Luke Cage

Luke: I'm about sick of always having to buy new clothes.

In Flashback:
*Mama Mabel Stokes chops off Wilfredo's finger for selling drugs, then makes young Cottonmouth help Uncle Pete punish him further, saying it's time for him to work instead of focusing on his piano-playing.
*Pete was sexually abusing young Mariah, but though Mabel says "family first", it's only after he goes around her to do business with the Puerto Ricans (Domingo's older brother Salvador) that Mabel cuts him permanently out, making Cottonmouth pull the trigger.

In the present:
*Luke interrupts Zip's gun sale.
*Cottonmouth is released with no charges. Tells Shades he needs to speak to Diamondback.
*Captain Audrey is pushed out, replaced by Inspector Priscilla Ridley.
*Mariah is asked to resign her position as Councilwoman.
*Cottonmouth threatens to reveal Luke as Carl Lucas and get him sent back to Seagate.
*Luke gets Domingo Colon's location from 'the incident' dvd street vendor, steals back the guns and gives them to Misty.
*Mariah's argument with Cottonmouth at Harlem's Paradise about her ruined career escalates when they compare who had a worse childhood, and after he blames her for what Pete did, she pushes him through the office window and then beats him to death. Shades is impressed, and convinces her to pin the blame on Luke Cage.
*Luke tells Claire about Seagate, and that he never told his father that he survived.
*Somebody in a van shoots Luke with a Judas bullet.

Wow, Mariah killing Cottonmouth took me completely by surprise. (I thought for a minute when Shades showed up at her place that she was going to turn out to be Diamondback.)

What stood out to me about the flashback sequences was how they showed and swapped around the vulnerability, humanity and badness of the characters. It was striking how Mama Mabel was shown as a destructive and abusive influence in Cornell's life but protective and (somewhat) nurturing in Mariah's and vice versa for Pete in Mariah's life. One of the strengths of the Marvel series is how the villains are humanised and Luke Cage has hit that note even better than previous iterations.

Wow. Did not see Mariah killing Cottonmouth, either. Did not expect to see the Judas bullet so soon in the series, either. It makes me happy that I tried to shove these into my eyeballs as fast as possible to avoid spoilers.

Also, glad to see Luke taking out a couple more doors.

Wow, Mariah killing Cottonmouth took me completely by surprise.

Yeah, it felt like it came out of nowhere and it was nice to see Cottonmouth get some sort of consequences for the shit he says and does. (How many henchmen can you realistically kill before they take you out? Especially when you're out of cash?). He's been acting invincible for a while.

Are we sure he's dead and not in a coma? Luke says to Misty that he isn't going to kill him, only make him wish like he had, and I can't help but be worried that she'll take it as an admission if Cottonmouth survived. More likely it's meant to be exculpatory so that only she believes in Cage's innocence, but I feel like the show could go either way with it.

Don't know why I said "a coma" instead of "really bad shape".

That clacking sound is the sound of many 400-level college papers being written about the Dark Maternal Influence in Netflix's Marvel shows. Matt Murdock should be happy he dodged that bullet, if he was capable of being happy at all.

That's some damn fine storytelling when you wind up sympathizing with the murdering gang lord as he's beaten to death.

I'd heard Kimba sing "Plain Gold Ring" but didn't know it was a Nina Simone song.

Damn. Her voice. And that piano and snare.

This show is introducing me to so much amazing music.

Interesting that when Cottonmouth finally goes too far, the line he crosses which is beyond the pale and gets him killed(?) is telling a rape victim that she was asking for it.

On the one hand, this.

That clacking sound is the sound of many 400-level college papers being written about the Dark Maternal Influence in Netflix's Marvel shows.

On the other, this.

Anyway, I called Mariah stepping in to take over the family business, as it were, from Cottonmouth. But I'm honestly a little surprised it happened so soon.

i'm not at all surprised that what cottonmouth said was what made mariah snap. i don't know how many other women would be surprised either.

Oh, yeah, he was dead as soon as those words left his mouth. Deservedly so.

the Dark Maternal Influence in Netflix's Marvel shows.

Couldn't help but notice it in The Get Down too.

"That's a great idea."

Shades is much more dangerous than I thought.

Well, that was certainly some turn of events halfway through I did not expect.
