I have been waiting centuries for the horror club to get around to this. Centuries, I tell you!

Ik ben afgesneden : "I have been waiting centuries for the horror club to get around to this. Centuries, I tell you"

Any oceans of time getting crossed there, sport?

I just watched this coincidentally the other day, so I'm happy to have a place to talk about it.

I'm still sort of going off of what people have articulated in older threads to make picks.

Does Monsters sound okay with everybody for the upcoming "Crossover" pick?
posted by DirtyOldTown at 9:49 AM on September 12, 2014

I think Monsters is interesting as a concept, but ultimately kind of boring for the most part. Europa Report does something similar, but is even more sci-fi and less horror, but I think it's a better film (similar shoestring budget, too).

If I thought I could get away with it... Oh, what the hell, of course I can get away with it. I suggest Peter Jackson's Braindead/Dead Alive for the crossover pick. It ticks all the crossover boxes (this is horror mixed with romance, comedy, romantic comedy, Freudian family drama, action, Indiana Jones style exploration adventure, BBC Nature documentary, religious treatise, parable about racism and xenophobia, 50s greaser exploitation movie), and if you're in doubt, remember that it's from the acclaimed director who brought you The Lord of the Rings.

The Lord of the what? More seriously, I have been busy with a new job so kind of fell off the map here but things are settling down so I will try to rejoin this week.

Anyway, I excitedly watched Monsters when it was first mentioned, months ago, and I dont think it is really interesting enough to discuss. I mean if you choose it, I will talk about it, but it is highly unlikely I will watch it again.

What do we want then?

Dead Alive would be an awesome movie to discuss, but I don't see any reason why it couldn't get picked for a non-crossover pick. So it seems like we'd be wasting a chance to pick something from the periphery.

Europa Report was remarkably authentic feeling, but didn't amount to much.

I'm not a huge fan of Monsters, either; I liked it okay. Dead Alive is pretty much just a straight up horror movie, but...you know, Meet the Feebles is on YouTube...

I am not a fan of horror movies, and I was floored by Let the Right One In.

If we don't want horror comedy, we could do horror SciFi. I suggest Videodrome.

You know what? I want to take back my unvote on Monsters. If we only choose movies that we personally like then what is the point of being in a movie club? Also, it isn't like this is our last week on earth, we have plenty of time to discuss all kinds of movies.

Videodrome.

Or Dreamscape. remember that? One of those movies that I saw as a kid and stuck with me in my subconscious. I recall something about a really long dark staircase with a monster.

Oh, man, I have exactly the same experience of Dreamscape, a thing I saw as a kid and that made a big impact, but I didn't even know what it was until a lot later, when I tracked it down through the magic of the Internet. I haven't seen that in decades. Is it actually good, or does it just seem good and effective in retrospect?

I was JUST talking about this movie the other day. Incidentally, it's based on a book that's wonderful.

Oh and for the drive-in I'd like suggest "House" which I actually did watch at the drive in. All that and Richard Moll.
posted by miss-lapin at 11:00 AM on September 17, 2014

House, that's been a long while. I wonder how well that holds up? It was kind of a hit with the neighborhood kids in the 80s, I remember.
posted by Joakim Ziegler at 11:03 AM on September 17, 2014

Or, wait, are we talking House as in 80s horror comedy, or House (Hausu) as in 70s Japanese horror mindfuck I-don't-even?
posted by Joakim Ziegler at 11:04 AM on September 17, 2014

House the 8os horror comedy (with Richard Moll AKA Bull from Night Court) as well as the Greatest American Hero William Katt and George Wendt (NORM!). I watched it again a few years ago and it's cheesy fun.

The October 8th wild card is going to be used on a joint pick with a club The Whelk is running. Announcement to follow.

Last chance to suggest a crossover pick for next week.

Not to be an idiot, but (ok I will) I haven't been following these posts until recently. What do you mean by "crossover movie"? I don't want to miss my last chance to suggest one!
posted by miss-lapin at 11:40 AM on September 17, 2014

It's all good. "Crossover" is our catchall term for movies that intersect a bit with horror, but aren't necessarily exactly horror films. Alien, for instance, while really more of a sci-fi movie, has enough horror to it that it would fit in here.

The category is intended as a sweet spot for movies that horror fans would probably want to screen and discuss, but which are unlikely to be picked in our other categories because they aren't technically entirely horror movies.

oooooooooooh that makes sense. I would like to suggest Cloverfield then.
posted by miss-lapin at 11:47 AM on September 17, 2014

But honestly I'd like to cast my vote with Dead Alive/Braindead which is too much gross fun to miss out on.
posted by miss-lapin at 11:48 AM on September 17, 2014

If there's a lot of demand for Dead Alive/Braindead, we can definitely fit that in, but I don't think it needs to go under crossover, as it's pretty much an inarguable horror movie all around.

It's from 1992. Do we consider that old enough to be "Retro"? Or should we put it in "Recent"?

These won't get officially announced for a few days. (I did a post today for Let the Right One In and my post for tomorrow will be announcing club pick #15.)

The following are the likely picks for the October Horror Club Extra Picks. The silent pick, by its nature, will be one fewer of us have seen, so I went with 1920's Paul Wegener film The Golem, which is arguably the best film by arguably the first feature film director specializing in horror. And it's on YouTube. All of the rest are intended to be the kind of standards that many will have already seen. For these, availability was not a key concern, since they may already be in your library or you may have already seen them anyway.

10/3 Halloween Extra #1 - Silent Era
The Golem

10/10 Halloween Extra #2 - Studio Era
Bride of Frankenstein

10/17 Halloween Extra #3 - Drive-In Era
House of Wax

10/24 Halloween Extra #4 - 70s/80s Slasher Era
Halloween

10/31 Halloween Extra #5 - 90s/Early Oughts Era
Scream
