Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Shadow of Malevolence   Rewatch
November 30, 2016 11:12 AM - Season 1, Episode 3 - Subscribe

The Separatists' secret weapon, a massive ship based ion cannon, has been revealed, and must be destroyed before it can cripple and destroy any more Republic fleets. Anakin Skywalker, Plo Koon, and Ahsoka Tano set out to do so with a flight of Y-wings, but first they must survive the journey to the dangerous ship.

Episode Information

"Shadow of Malevolence" is the seventh episode in the chronological viewing order.

Official Synopsis
"Easy is the path to wisdom for those not blinded by themselves." With the help of his Padawan Ahsoka and Jedi Master Plo Koon, Anakin utilizes new long-range Y-wing bombers to lead a bold strike on General Grievous' warship, the Malevolence, and its destructive weapon.

Trivia!
  • Visible in the background during the mission briefing is the "Crumb Bomber," a Republic gunship with a Kowakian monkey-lizard illustration painted on its side. The command ship, itself, is called the Resolute.
  • A four-legged power droid is seen in this episode, it's called a 'plunk droid' after the name it makes as it walks around.
  • The chairs used during the briefing are basic in design with casters. They were based off the chairs seen in use on the Death Star in A New Hope.
  • The original "fortune cookie opening" for the episode was "Easy is the path to wisdom for those not blinded by ego."
  • The appearance of the Clone Wars-era Y-wing bomb arises directly from the original Y-wing design from A New Hope based on the idea by Visual Effects Art Director Joe Johnston that the Rebel Alliance would use a "chopped down" older craft. The design of the Republic era Y-wing was intended to bridge the design aesthetic between the two trilogies.
Next time on The Clone Wars!

The next episode in the chronological viewing order is "Destroy Malevolence," episode four of the first season.

I love master plo, I never got up to season 3 of this, but we never saw that much more of them. One of my criticisms of the series in general was how we got introduced to a tonne of awesome new jedi masters, but saw tantalisingly little of them! I suppose this is also my anti anakin bias showing.

Master Plo was a favorite of the show's executive director, Dave Filoni. Before he got the job, on his own, while he was working at Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dave made his own Plo costume and then recorded himself meeting fans in a line somewhere. It's probably online if one looks for it.

Plo gets a few more episodes down the road past three, but he was definitely one of the best and seemingly, wisest of the Jedi. Which probably owes a lot to Filoni's interest in the character, as his original introduction was either sitting in a chair in the council or being shot down during the Order 66 montage. Filoni, did after all, choose Plo to be the one to find and recruit Ahsoka for the Jedi Order.

Plo Koon is definitely great! I thought this one was good. The kids were big fans of the rays.
