Holmes and Watson get into another sticky situation, but two very talkative gang members lead them to sweet victory.

It's interesting that they went with "surplus syrup sold on the black market" instead of the great Maple Syrup Heist. Perhaps because that would overshadow the primary story of the man who was holding the folks in the diner hostage (or making it look that way, so he could kill the cop who ignored his son's case for 5 years).

Or maybe they wanted to, and the still-in-production movie, The Great Maple Syrup Heist, prevented them from more closely associating this plot with that story.

This felt like a filler episode. It could have been shown anywhere during the season and not hurt continuity.

Just before we watched it I said to my Boyf 'I don't think Shinwell will survive the season because they can no longer place Joan in believable danger for her life.'.

This episode sure felt like dagnabit Joan might actually get shot!

I do think that the season arc is building up to 'Sherlock learns that his hubris hurts other people, people he cares about' but we shall see....
