An anthology of four short horror films that are directed and written by women: "The Box," by Jovanka Vuckovic (former editor of Rue Morgue magazine); "Her Only Living Son" by Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, the upcoming Destroyer); "The Birthday Cake" by St. Vincent (aka rock musician Annie Clark); "Don't Fall" by Roxanne Benjamin (Southbound).

Thumbs up to "The Box" and "Her Only Living Son"...not so much to the others. "The Box" especially really creeped me out.

Yep, I liked those two the best as well.

That said, while I was not at all in love with the writing on Annie Clark's segment, I was actually impressed with the direction. It had a distinct, weird, uncomfortable mood right from the get-go. I'll be interested to see her adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

"The Box" was by far my favorite—It was so creepy, so mysterious, so terrifying. I recently cued it up to show my SO after we watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which had a premise that was very similar in some ways and very different in others.

"The Birthday Cake" was hilarious and Melanie Lynskey can sell that kind of role better than anyone. "Her Only Living Son" was good but I thought the build-up was better than the conclusion.

"Don't Fall" was my least favorite, only because it was so straightforward and simple that it seemed dull in comparison to the other three very strange segments. But I loved director Roxanne Benjamin's contribution to Southbound and look forward to her take on Night of the Comet.
