I found this really affecting, even though it ended too neatly (so did the book), had a few moments that could've been resolved better (that "I don't see color" conversation was not good), and left out the dog.

Amandla Stenberg is amazing.

I thought they did a good job with what is a subtle and complex book. There was a lot of (understandable) simplification for the sake of time. I thought the hairbrush scene at school was a good way to distill the interactions between Hailey and Starr.

I thought the whole cast, especially her immediate family, was great.

I just saw this yesterday and absolutely loved it. I loved the book as well. My face hurt afterward from crying the almost the entire time. I just had tears streaming down my face for most of it.

The ten or so minute section of the shooting, Starr being questioned by the police, and then waking up from a nightmare screaming and vomiting was excruciating to watch. As it should have been. I'm glad it didn't flinch away from the terror and the agony. I felt Starr's pain and her parents' desperate love and helplessness to protect her. Amandla Stenberg gave a truly extraordinary performance.

I also LOVEDLOVEDLOVED her parents. They had chemistry and were wonderful characters. I will think about the scene with the dad on the lawn for a long time.

I would have liked to see more of a rebuttal to the "I don't see color" scene and the scene with the cop uncle. I thought it was a little odd that they went so unexamined.

I also haven't seen Anthony Mackie in anything but a Marvel movie in a long time and I was a little "...Okay" about his casting as the drug dealer/gang leader. Two seconds into his first appearance, I was totally convinced. Damn, what a great actor he is.
