The Walking Dead: Evolution
November 29, 2018 3:25 PM - Season 9, Episode 8 - Subscribe

A small rescue mission braves a dangerous herd in their hunt for a missing comrade, only to discover a surprising threat that could doom them all.

Jesus, Aaron, and Daryl track down Eugene, encountering a strange herd while on their way. Various ploys to steer the herd away from them don't work, and they all find themselves stuck in a cemetery, surrounded.

Michonne, Siddiq, and the new folks make it to Hilltop which is super-wary about them. Michonne and Carol have a tense conversation. On the plus side, Michonne learns about all the secrets her people have been keeping from her and she seems to be back up to speed now.

Gabriel is annoyed with having to care for Negan, who later discovers that Gabriel accidentally left the cell unlocked. Oops.

Henry crumbles immediately in the face of peer pressure and heads out into the woods with his new peers from Hilltop where they have a cool clubhouse and a walker trapped in a pit that they throw rope rings at, and piss on for added fun. Henry has a twinge of conscience, puts the walker out of its misery, and finds himself in the clink for his trouble. He bonds with Earl over their problems with the drink.

Meanwhile, back in the cemetery, Michonne and the new folks show up in the nick of time to open the stuck gate. Jesus hangs back to bust out some of his cool ninja moves and kill some more of the walkers while everyone else gets out, and ends up dead when a walker proves a little livelier than expected.

The others rush back into the cemetery and discover those walkers that whisper aren't just walkers, they're people wearing walker skin. And now they have an even bigger group trapped in the cemetery.

And thus concludes this half-season, with new episodes returning in February.

Does this mean that there aren't actually smart walkers now; but more that another group has found a smarter way to shepherd walkers? I'm a little disappointed by that because zombies-but-clever seemed like an interesting twist.

Nonetheless: genuine "holy shit what" reaction to Jesus's death. That was well done.

Henry's story felt like a really low-rent Lost Boys pastiche.

Also, goddamnit, Gabriel. You let him escape and you've probably doomed us to another long tedious Negan arc.

What makes me crazy about this is there have been any number of viable solutions to the zombie problem, heck just a big moat/ditch, but they just fuss around doing soapy melodrama and get all stabby at each other. At least there are more horses, gas goes bad in just a few months.

I've mostly been on board with how the show has changed things up this season, but this turn with Michonne in the last couple of episodes has been disappointing. Hopefully they fill in the backstory from the time jump early in the last half of the season.

Nice to see Oceanside get a little shout-out, so I guess they may still be a thing.

I agree. It feels unearned. The show has been so bad for the last few seasons that I don't really trust them to justify this sudden change in character, despite the reason improvements.
