Jason Momoa tried. Very hard. But the writing either wasn’t there (Extra Christmas Ghost) or relied on him being as effortlessly charming as — to select an option entirely at random — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Gemma). And while I think Momoa is usually a fun guy (when he’s not being a dick to Amber Heard), he is not as effortlessly charming as the Rock.

High point was Aidy’s WU character, but that was like a B segment amongst a bunch of D work.

Yes, Aidy's 7th Grader was fantastic! I really liked "Them Trumps," too - not an A segment but the quick cut-to-credits after each episode was really funny.

I normally LOVE any Eric Trump bit but I realized I prefer the Weekend Update structure for the brothers.

This was a couple weeks ago but stating for the record that the Thanksgiving "Turkey Dance" sketch with Steve Carell only gets better with age.

Hiding to impress her parents was the highlight for me.

But the writing either wasn’t there

Yeah, the writing just wasn't hitting the mark. The sketches should have been funny, but they just kept falling flat. I think I laughed more at this teaser twitter thread than any of the skits.

First Impressions was legitimately good! Top 10 sketch for the season so far. MORE ABSURDITY, YALIES.

I also laughed at GE Big Boys, but there wasn't much to it to ruin it. Gemma is good, too.

But man, my station showed a Justin Timberlake Xmas episode right afterward and the difference even from a Fallon-era episode was pretty big. You don't see anything like "Santa's My Boyfriend" these days, that's for sure.

Maybe I'm high, but this was the most enjoyable episode of this season so far for me.

I enjoyed the Intro and Them Trumps - both designed to get underneath skin.

Weekend Update and Mamoa openly expressed LGBTQ and gender equality solidarity. GE Big Boys was hilarious.

Rudolf's Big Night addressed a MAJOR pet peeve of mine growing up and remains so every Christmastime - Rudolf's bullied and suddenly everyone starts celebrating him when Santa/teacher/grown-up endorses them because they are exploiting Rudolf's handicap? Fuck That Shit.

I like Mamoa as an entertainer; his enthusiasm really shows (and I'm a fan of SNL as a variety show) so by that criteria he was at least good as a host. He was given a little bit of range to play around with (he was Santa, right?!).

But the Kal Drogo Dojo skit! I'm sure everyone involved had fun with that. The first McKinnon character fail in a very very very long time though.

She really didn't carry a Joffrey. Bennet might have been able to do a better job.

Huh? Were there words spoken in the Extra Christmas Ghost sketch? I must have missed that part.

I didn't really know who Jason Momoa was, but I watch Game of Thrones so I guess I've seen him before. I agree with what was said above, he seemed like a willing host who just had bad sketches written for him. The monologue seemed like it lacked focus, like it was going to be a musical thing and then it shifted gears.

I liked GE Big Boys. A pretty good reversal of the pink tools for women thing.

I don't know what to think of Mumford & Sons. They're like Frontier Coldplay or something. Entirely mediocre and forgettable. I guess it's nice that there's finally a musical guest I've heard of and know a bit, I just don't find them very interesting.

Weird how Pete Davidson is becoming the breakout star this season. It's like Lorne took a liking to him all of a sudden. I think he's ok, and I'm glad he's branching out from just playing himself, but I don't find him to be all that strong with his characters.

Robert DeNiro is absolutely terrible with everything he does on the show and I think someone needs to have an intervention with Lorne so he stops putting his buddies on the show every week.

It wasn't a bad show, but it wasn't great either.

DeNiro's ability to read text printed on a cue card was quite impressive. Or the opposite of that, one or the other.

Not sure if Khal Drogo's Ghost Dojo would've worked better for me if I had any interest in Game of Thrones, but I have my doubts.

First Impressions was the standout sketch to me.

Them Trumps is the opposite of a standard SNL sketch, in that it has endings and not much else.

I liked this show! I found that Momoa seemed "up for it" and even though some of the sketches were goofy, he was fun to look at and seemed to interact well with the cast and they seemed to like him.

I have to admit that I don't like Eric without Don Jr as much and yeah Deniro needs to learn to get better at cue cards or maybe stop doing that role. But hey, all those outfit changes, all that smiling, all those weird scenarios? I usually don't love the holiday episodes because there are a bunch of terrible-families sketches but the ones this time around worked out better.

The elf sketch didn't get awful. The opening monologue had singing and wasn't terrible. The Dorks sketch was basically just supposed to be a Revenge of the Nerds parody so I guess I was the target demo? But it seemed like a weird choice otherwise. I even "got" Gemma for the first time, I usually don't like her sketches but for some reason this one worked. Mumford and Sons are pretty "whatever" for me, but it's rare that the musical act is the worst part of the show. All in all this was one of the better episodes for me.

The best thing about the intro is that it was mercifully short. I really don’t need to see an extended sketch of De Niro mangling cue cards.

I totally loved this episode, as it felt like the exact opposite of the previous episode to me. (Except that Ego got one line.)
