Her ticket: earning Captain Ann-Marie’s trust using a secret about a kidnapped Haitian scientist and a mysterious weapon he calls The Black God’s Drums.

Like 75% of this is worldbuilding, but the worldbuilding is delicious so I would gladly read more that is set in this world and about these characters.

Hey look, an alternate take on the civil war that's not horrible!

I read the Kindle sample of this a while ago, and even that short bit was definitely interesting! It's on my list to read, and I hope to come back to it soon.
