What an exciting goal by Oshoala! I'm really happy for Nigeria.
Finishing from that angle at speed is seriously impressive.

Watching the recap for the Oshoala goal, the game looked much closer than 2-0 would imply.

Germany finally manages to stay onside and gets a goal for their trouble. Spain have kept up pressure but been unable to finish. Should be an interesting second half.

The build up to that Germany goal through the midfield passes was so impressive.

Ok yeah, the delay on calling offside is ridiculous.

This is some good snark: Pity the Poor Man who's had the Women's World Cup shoved down his throat
Once again I am hugely grateful to the community that will not allow us to forget the great under-reported story of this Women’s World Cup: men. Most specifically, the men who are not watching it. We hear so much about the tournament itself. Too much, it is argued – and at the expense of one of the four great civil rights questions of our era: 1) When are we getting a White History Month? 2) When is International Men’s Day? 3) Isn’t it time we had Straight Pride? and 4) Can you imagine how sexist people would say it was if we had a men’s World Cup?
I could not agree more with the gentlemen who dare to ask these questions – and not just so that I can buy time while I frantically locate the exit.

Can I also say that one thing I love about the Women's World Cup is seeing how many women bounce back up after a rough tackle/contact when Neymar would still be rolling around like he'd been shot.

This was already an exciting game but the France own-goal has really made it tense.

The French team has seemed a lot less smooth in this game than in the match against South Korea. They've kept misjudging each other's runs, sending the ball into spaces no one is occupying. So on the one hand, they were lucky to win, but on the other, Norway didn't offer much of a threat at all.

I mean, technically, Australia didnt score that goal.
Really curious about the strategy of taking out both Marta and Formiga off since it sure seems to have backfired.

I have a question from one of the replays: Does it count as a touch if the ball touches your ponytail?

Desi Lydic did a nice piece on the Daily Show on the US-Thailand game, and the womens ongoing lawsuit for equal pay.
Noah: You're saying the womens team is just sending a message to US soccer?posted by Marky at 9:32 PM on June 13, 2019 [2 favorites]
Lydic: Yes. And clearly that message was that they need to be paid more.
Oh, and maybe US soccer should pay the men less, maybe they'd then be motivated to actualy qualify for their World Cup. GOAL!
If Scotland is going down, it's going down fighting. Nice goal in the 88th.

Depending on what happens with ENG-ARG, Scotland might have a shot at the 3rd place seed, I guess.

The Argentina side have been through some shit to get here - they didn't play for two years because the AFA wouldn't even pay them a meager £6.70 a day. I have no problem rooting for them.

Now that I am north of 40 I have a particular fondness for the players who are thought to be positively ancient but still competing.... so on that note, congrats to grandma Carli Lloyd, age 36, for scoring the first goal of this match!

The Chilean keeper was outstanding today and kept her team in the game. It could have been much more dire for them had she not been exemplary.

Agree re: the Chilean keeper, she was holding that line basically all by herself.

Ok I'm irrationally angry that the usually-great Guardian play-by-plays are half-assing it by doing the two games simultaneously in one thread. And in general I've felt that the MBM have been very lackluster compared to the attention they lavish on the men's world cup. Boo.
