Despite being on mandatory leave, Ralph continues to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the night of the murder; Jack has a hair-raising experience at a remote barn where key evidence and a mysterious substance have been found. Unorthodox PI Holly Gibney is brought into the investigation.
Bless you for this post! I am impressed also! I was also wondering how this version of Holly was going to hold up to the Audience Network's Mr. Mercedes version of her as played by Justine Lupe, since I really liked that depiction of her. I like this version of Holly, too. They both work.

I had to remind my wife that Holly was from the Mr. Mercedes books (and TV adaption, I guess!), but once she made the connection she remembered the character. I like Cynthia Erivo's take on the character so far.

I just watched the first three eps of this series, and was really enjoying things until I was sideswiped by the inevitable Steven King Magical Negro trope. I sincerely hope (based on upthread comments) that Holly's more fleshed out than that, but oof is it cringey. See also The Stand, Green Mile, The Shining, etc etc...

In my opinion - Holly is the main character, and not just there to help. She's also not black in the book. The other show people are just the set up for Holly, P.I. But I understand if other people find her to be a trope. It's sad tho - because Holly is my favorite character from the book series.

The soundscapes and background music fills out much of the scenes and generates that extra sense of dread that reading the book brings.
