The New Pope: Ninth Episode
March 10, 2020 11:58 PM - Season 1, Episode 9 - Subscribe

Season finale. A historic meeting of the minds occurs in the wake of a hostage situation as the future of the Church hangs in the balance.

The New Pope finally meets The Young Pope in a satiating, beatific finale (Eric Thurm for the A.V. Club):
The Young Pope was less a season of television than a fever dream, a bizarre exploration of the institution of the church, the personage of Lenny Belardo, and the nature of faith writ large. The New Pope is, for better and for worse, a season of television.

Loved the intro, with JP3 and crew marching left and Jude Law walking through the beach to the right.

I...guess I'm OK with the ending? The big reveal of the Hoodie Terrorists caused my wife to yell at me about how much she hates this show, and reduced my desire to buy one of those hoodies.

The end? Yeah, I'll take it.

Also, so much Christ imagery with Lenny. Raised from the dead (or not, really); carried in a cross position by the adoring crowd, then dies (again/ for real), something like the brief return of Jesus (died, defeated death, came back, then ascended to heaven).

Will there be a New New Pope, aka Young/ New Pope season 3? I haven't been able to find anything about renewal for the show.

The Ringer review suggested he has an idea for a third season, and maybe they can get Jude Law to wear even less.

We've seen his butt, how much more do they want? (We have seen his butt, haven't we? I wasn't dreaming that, right?)

Perhaps they're fans of Monty Python and demand full frontal nudity.

I.... would be okay with that.

I wonder what the title for the next season could be? The Old Pope? The Last Pope? The Fun Pope?

I dunno. I felt like everything was just a bit too pat - everyone got their happy endings (Voiello as Pope, Lenny as Christ, Brannox hiding at home with Sofia...) and I wanted something a bit more than that.
