Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Future Pandemics
February 18, 2021 6:38 AM - Season 8, Episode 1 - Subscribe

This week, still from the void, but hopefully not for much longer.... The farce of an impeachment trial against Donald Trump, where Ted Cruz met with the defense lawyers during it and told them they'd already won because Republicans weren't going to convict regardless, and on Republican support of the Capitol riots and state Republican efforts to make voting much harder, efforts that some Democrats don't seem very excited about thwarting. And Now: Newscasters Offer Tips For How To Say "I Love You" In The Worst Imaginable Way. Main story (20m): Pandemics of the future! Not COVID, but the next ones, which believe it or not could be much worse. John discusses where they may come from, why they're on the rise, and what we can do to limit them.

Brief synopsis of reasons for new pandemics starting: deforestation, increased contact between humans and wildlife, exotic pet ownership, and the consumption of wild species, such as sold at wet markets. Also, factory farms and even state fairs could play roles in their creation and spread.

Awful newscaster-suggested ways to say "I Love You," by giving bouquets made of:
meat sticks, fried chicken, Chik-Fil-A nuggets and waffles, chicken wings and chicken fingers, corn dogs, salami, sausage, bacon, ribs, beef jerky , Jack Links beef strips, more beef jerky, and Maine lobster tails.

It was well done as always, but would have been nice to start the year off with something a bit less Grim Meathook Future.

I think you may have forgotten how this show operates, Marticus.

I'm really happy he's back. I noticed the context and long stories the show provides helps me contextualize all the awful shit that's going down. Even when it's grimdark there's enough humor and warmth to help carry it through. Yes you might not be able to make an individual difference, but it's important to still care and others care too.

Grim Meathook Future

Another excellent alternate title for the show. Or have they already used that one?
