Supernatural: Unforgiven

Sam receives some coordinates in an anonymous text message, he and Dean follow them to a town in Rhode Island, and Sam begins having flashbacks of the time he and Samuel worked a case there.

Quotes:

Dean: I hate to say I told you so.
Sam: You *love* to say I told you so.

Sam: So, Mel Gibson really took a turn this past year. Huh?
Dean: Or he's possessed. Seriously, think about it.

Dean: [finds a business card from "Agent H. Roark"] Where'd you get this?
Nicole's roommate: Oh, Nicole got that from that FBI guy.
Dean: Agent Roark. About -- about yea high? [puts his hand up and gestures about a foot above his head]
Nicole's roommate: Yeah, that was him. One of the men that disappeared last year lived in our building.
Dean: Right.
Nicole's roommate: So Agent Roark was asking us all questions about it, I guess.
Dean: You guess? So he -- he came by here?
Nicole's roommate: Oh, he came -- by a few times.
Dean: Did he? To, uh... Speak to Nicole.
Nicole's roommate: Right.
Dean: How would you characterize their relationship?
Nicole's roommate: Relationship? They weren't having...
Dean: Just the -- the -- tone or the nature of their conversation.
Nicole's roommate: Well, loud. And athletic.

Dean: I gotta say, man. You really got around. I mean, soulless or not, I'm actually kind of impressed.

Debbie Harris: Where's your partner? The big bald guy? Agent Wynand, right?
Sam: Agent Wynand, of course. Well...
Dean: Sex rehab. Yeah, you've heard of plushies, right?

Dean: [to Sam] I found the connection between the missing chicks. They all banged the same dude: you.

Trivia:

Sam and Samuel use the names Agent Roark and Agent Wynand when first investigating the town. Howard Roark and Gail Wynand are characters from Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead.

Upon entering Bristol, RI, Sam and Dean pass a sign for the city that says, "Where memories are made". Sam has lost his memories of the prior year after his soul was put back. In this episode, Sam's memories of his hunt in Bristol with Samuel slowly return.

The episode title is a Metallica song.

Ugh, what was with the Fountainhead names? Was Soulless Sam an Ayn Rand fan? I must admit... it would make sense. If so, it is amusing that the writers chose that way of indicating their contempt for Ayn Rand.

I can't believe the way Samuel just let Sam shoot the Arachne's victims without at least protesting more.

Sam certainly seems to have a thing for picking women up and setting them on a convenient surface and/or backing them up against a wall when things are getting heavy between them. But then with the height differential... he probably needs to.

The faded brown jacket with the black-lined hood is an item we see on Sam a number of times prior to this season. In the flashbacks in this episode, we see it got torn in the sleeve during the fight with the Arachne. But in the photo header for this thread, we see Dean wearing it, even though it's always been Sam's. I suppose they just decided to put it on Jensen Ackles for the photo shoot for some reason, though the sleeves would surely be too long on him.

At least the writers (or casting directors) don't have soul-less Sam hooking up exclusively with very young women. But I still have to side-eye the subtext of "oh, if only I didn't have a soul any scruples, I'd get lucky all the time!"

Samuel may be genuinely afraid of Sam, and didn't protest much out of fear. Or bought that Arachne's victims were already fatally bitten and a bullet is a more merciful death. Spider venom is... unpleasant, and even lethal doses tend not to be lethal quickly.

I dug the the Bittens' contact lenses with an extra pupil in each eye. Not accurate or anything, but a nice simple visual shortcut.
