Flesh for Frankenstein (1973)
January 3, 2022 2:22 PM - Subscribe

A delectably gory and cynical social satire from acclaimed filmmaker Paul Morrissey, this film, disingenuously billed at the time as Andy Warhol's Frankenstein is among the most original and transgressive interpretations of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. With an exceptional cast, led by Udo Kier, in what might be his most iconic performance, Joe Dallesandro, Monique van Vooren, and Italian child star Nicoletta Elmi, and featuring a lush soundtrack by Claudio Gizzi (Blood for Dracula). Currently streaming in the US on Shudder in both 2D and 3D versions.

The 3D version on Shudder is the old school, red and blue lenses in paper frames 3D. Currently 86% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

When I was in high school the cinema I worked at showed this in 3d as part of a midnight movie series.

One of my favorite movie quotes ever came from this film, because the context was so obscene and the line was just so gonzo.

"To know death you must first fuck life in the gall bladder!"

It seems like the words "death" and "life" should be reversed - especially given the on-screen action - but I'm pretty sure it was delivered as I remember, I mean it was seared into my brain. But it's been nearly 40 years since I saw it.

I occasionally utter that line when the situation seems to call for it, but so far no one has picked up the reference.

Some Alamo theaters are doing a double billing of this with Blood for Dracula in about two weeks - I'm looking forward to it!

I saw this in 3D in Toronto about a quarter-century ago. Tremendous fun!
