Only Murders in the Building: Whole season
March 9, 2022 5:16 PM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

They had me at Steve Martin and Martin Short. Selena Gomez is excellent, too. The three neighbors living in a posh NYC building team up to solve a murder in the building while making a true-crime podcast about their efforts. The ending twist sets up a season 2. It's on Hulu.

I finally watched this a few weeks ago and really loved it. It scratched an itch I didn't know I had for quirky, kind of cozy mysteries. I don't think they quite stuck the ending, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

We liked this quite a lot. It was a fresh change-of-pace from almost everything else passing for original streaming content these days. Oddly, none of the three principals are especially riveting actors, but they all work well together (not being a big Martin Short fan, though, I often found him to be a bit more Martin Short-ish for my liking. YMMV)

I had no problem with the ending, though the mystery seemed to resolve itself pretty quickly following a relatively drawn-out play. And, honestly, the perp was pretty obvious once you met them. But, the show was nonetheless entertaining and amusing. And, there will be a second series!

I had issues with the murderer being just a little over-the-top at the end but everything else worked really, really well. I loved the interplay between the main three characters. The "you're too old" jokes never got old. Martin Short usually wears thin for me but this character's arc was compelling.

The only 'issue' I've had is that there's been too little recognition of the score and sound design of the show, which was fantastic. The theme, undermusic and especially episode 7 are so sublime. Siddhartha Khosla, the composer, has a few interviews out there, which aren't super illuminating generally except for this nugget: I use a bassoon a lot in the score, and that was fun for me because I’ve never used a bassoon before and we had some of the best bassoon players in the country playing on the score.

The idea of the crux of the plot, however arbitrary seeming (although i'm not sure which other instruments' cleaning tools could be misconstrued as sex toys) guiding the composer's hand makes me appreciate his scoring all the more.

It took me a few episodes to get into it, but I'm eagerly awaiting season 2.

I have to put in a word for Steve Martin's physical comedy, I don't remember the last time I laughed that hard. The show itself is charming as hell and I can't wait for Season 2.

There are Fanfare posts for each ep, though the first three are all together.
