Flee (2021)

Recounted mostly through animation to protect his identity, Amin looks back over his past as a child refugee from Afghanistan as he grapples with a secret he's kept hidden for 20 years.

Flee is absolutely stunning, on more levels than I can count. It's nominated for Best Animated, Documentary and International.

Thank you for posting this, I hadn't heard about this movie. It was great. There were a number of points in the movie that surprised me--which says a lot about me and what I expected from "Afghani Refugee Story" as opposed to the complexity and humanity of the actual thing. Really, really beautiful.

I finally caught up with this in my efforts to watch as many Oscar nominees as I can. I am so glad I did. It's just amazing and I loved it--at times my heart hurt so much for him and his family (and that poor girl captured by the Russian police) that I almost cried, and I was so thrilled with how his brother reacted to his coming out that I laughed with glee...it's just incredible. It's so, so emotional, hits you in so many different ways. Disney/Pixar has such a stranglehold on the animation category, and it's so irritating because this should be the movie to take all the awards; I'll keep my fingers crossed for the other categories it's nominated in. More people should see this.
