The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

One night per year, the government sanctions a 12-hour period in which citizens can commit any crime they wish -- including murder -- without fear of punishment or imprisonment. Leo (Frank Grillo), a sergeant who lost his son, plans a vigilante mission of revenge during the mayhem. However, instead of a death-dealing avenger, he becomes the unexpected protector of four innocent strangers who desperately need his help if they are to survive the night.

In this, the second Purge film, the series settles into what will become a trademark: intertwined stories/groups of people out in the street, attempting to survive the Purge.

Currently streaming in the US on Peacock Premium and available for digital rental on most/all of the usual services.

As someone who generally would rather be home in most shitshow-in-the-streets circumstances, this was the first of the Purges to really stress me out! This is also the first of the Purges to feel like the movie version of a Thermals album about America’s slide into christofascism, so that’s fun (“fun”) too.
