The classic summoned by a mysterious letter setup feels like a throwback in this day and age, this is a bit “This meeting could have been a phone call” the movie. But I appreciate that it jumps right into the weird immediately on arrival. Pretty good!

Yeah, I will forgive a movie a lot if it manages to set up a good atmosphere, and this one really did with its dreamy, desolate off-season beach town. I got strong Carnival of Souls vibes from it. The actual plot I was pretty meh on throughout, but that did not hamper my enjoyment.

Beat me to it DirtyOldTown. I was going to post this Friday! It brings the weird very quickly.

Despite loving folk horror/Lovecraftian-sinister-villagers-with-a-secret movies, I was really disappointed by this one! I definitely didn't feel the atmosphere others were impressed by, though I probably would have been more generous if I wasn't familiar with the main shooting locations and therefore mad about how the movie didn't live up to the simultaneously charming/lost in time vibe of New Smyrna Beach.

I did not recognize the actress as being the lead from House of the Devil
It reminded me a little of The Beyond but not as just whack shit trash as that. I feel like this movie really needed something else, and some better dialogue mayhap.

On rewatch, I liked it much less. The clumsiness of the script dragged it down. I still admire the vibes, though.
