DC League of Super-Pets (2022)

Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, Krypto must master his own powers for a rescue mission when Superman is kidnapped.

Weird summary--Krypto actually loses his powers, which he's already adept with, and has to rely on some newly-powered-up fellow-pets to save the League.

Anyway, engaging visual design, subpar voice acting, weak humor of the children's-cartoon-industrial-complex variety, points for diversity in the human background, no one will ever touch Clancy Brown's voice work for Lex Luthor, probably you'll be able to stand it if you have kids to entertain.

Note that one of the main characters suffers a heartwrenching (in this context, anyway) injustice that isn't explicitly rectified by the end of the film...sensitive kids may be bothered by it. (By "sensitive kids," I may mean "my own inner nine-year-old.")

Am I reading correctly that there is no Streaky the Super-Cat? What a complete failure. I also can't believe they left out Comet the Super-Horse, who used to be a centaur in love with Super-Girl. If you are going to dip your toes into the madness of 1950s and 60s DC, jump into the deep end or stay home.

(And actually there was a cat character, but they were on the side of evil.)

I hear that he's going to be the villain in the sequel.

Is there any apparent reason why Ace is a boxer(?) instead of a German shepherd or a Great Dane (as per various bits of canon)?

Lack of sufficiently rigorous commitment to the integrity of canon?

I guess it could be a different Ace. I have relatives who just kept calling every new dog by the same name as their first dog. I think they were up to version three or four by the time the last one died. And it wouldn't surprise me if the next one is number five.

I had a great time with this! Great voice acting (I didn't really buy Marc Maron as Luthor at first, but it grew on me, especially if the conceit is that he's just very smart but coasting on the real brains of Mercy and the guinea pig. Some laugh-out-loud moments; I'm not sure why but the heartbroken robot actually had me pause the movie for a minute to catch up from laughing.

No complaints. Solidly in the category of "better than it needed to be," and I enjoyed the pokes at the whole Black Adam anti-hero concept in the post-credits sequence.
