In ANY case, this struck me as a very well done homage to all the 80's & 90's HK action flicks that helped usher Chow Yun Fat into stardom (especially in the West.)
I'd have to do a rewatch to catch them, but I'm 100% willing to bet that Wen Jiang threw all sorts of callbacks and Easter eggs for a variety of films from that era into this one.

He strikes me as a big fan of western cinema as well and that big Patton bit/homage/pastiche cracked me the hell up every time I watch it.
