The Pianist (2002)

In this adaptation of the autobiography The Pianist: The Extraordinary True Story of One Man's Survival in Warsaw, 1939-1945, Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody), a Polish Jewish radio station pianist, sees Warsaw change gradually as World War II begins. Szpilman is forced into the Warsaw Ghetto, but is later separated from his family during Operation Reinhard. From this time until the concentration camp prisoners are released, Szpilman hides in various locations among the ruins of Warsaw.

Directed by Roman Polanski.

I liked this when I saw it, but then I learned about Roman Polanski's past and ... yecch. [sigh]

Picked this up from the library last week on the never ending quest to check off IMDB top 200 movies. Then I saw the director and his wikipedia... ick.

As for the film -- there's a long run of WW2 movies at the top I've been avoiding. Being based on a survivor's memoir, the plot doesn't really build to a coherent point. Yet we don't get any of Szpilman's internal monologue as commentary either. I feel like the ending suggests that classical music is a kind of civilizing force, as if Nazi's didn't have their own infatuation with Wagner, Beethoven and Bach.
