About the most positive thing I can say about this movie was that, in exchange for the rights to use the subtitle and a few vaguely similar plot elements, Disney gave author Tim Powers a decent chunk of change that he could surely use.

However, I'd much rather re-read Powers' 1987 novel On Stranger Tides that's vintage "What if historical stuff but with weird magic?" fantasy of the sort Powers does best than rewatch this film.

The book was out of print and somewhat hard to find for a long time, but the movie also changed that situation for the better, so I guess that's two things I like about it.

Adding a recommendation for Tim Powers. He writes dense books, but wonderfully creative.

I was so excited when this was announced because I'm a huge Tim Powers fan and the story is great. My family really likes the Pirates of the Caribbean movies generally so it was a no brainer that we'd be seeing it. The movie was ok and I'm not sad that I watched it, but it really didn't do much as a book adaptation.

I usually don't like Johnny Depp (with a few exceptions like Edward Scissorhands) but he's ok for me in these. The rest of the cast is great. The special effects are really well done and that's fun to watch. This is the only Pirates movie I have any vague recollection of the plot after watching it, so that's something I guess.
