I'd swear that about 90% of Toxie's appeal is that whole mid-80s 'Murica thing. Like, someone at Troma just went, "You want mid-eighties Ugly American? Oh boy" and cracks their knuckles.

Toxie!

There were four of these (and a TV show?!) spanning 16 years...

...and Peter Dinklage is going to play Toxie, supported by Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon.

Man, my friends and I found this some time after getting into Re-Animator and Class of Nuke 'Em High in the mid 80s and it rocked our world! Very much a teenager "Ha ha, YESSS" movie. I don't know where or what we had to use to find out what Troma was (Fangoria maybe?), but we sure kept an eye out for the other ones we knew about. Haven't seen any since Tromeo & Juliet, tho. Point being, a seismic movie this is.

Oh, yesssss. Growing up in New Jersey, Toxie was exactly the kind of representation we craved. "Yes! We're from New Jersey! And it sucks!"

About fifteen years ago I saw a musical theater version in Seoul.

Yes! The Toxic Crusaders cartoon (and action figure: "they're gross, but they still get girls") was probably my introduction to the Toxic Avenger (which I gleefully consumed in my teens) and Troma in general. I'm fortunate in that our local video store had all the Toxic Avenger movies, each of which I certainly rented more than once.

I like to think that evening's discussion went like this:

"Hey honey, why don't we stay in tonight and just enjoy each other?"

"Oh my shits, I just saw an ad for a musical theater Toxic Avenger. Sell the car, sell the house, sell the kids, I'm never coming back."
