Blue Lights follows rookie police officers working in Belfast, a city in which being a frontline response cop comes with unique pressures and dangers. The city, nominally "post-conflict" still has sectarian divides, paramilitaries running drug operations and conditions which make police work difficult. Sounds brilliant! Looks like it's coming to SBS On Demand for any other Aussie nerds for gritty police procedurals...

The series could maybe be compared to "Line of Duty" in terms of its coverage of British policing. On the whole it is heavier on a feeling of potential threat than of constant action. The writers grew up in Belfast, and I think it shows in their understanding of the place. A second series has been commissioned.

Enjoyed this. Some of the in car dialogue felt a bit forced but some solid work on imminent danger throughout. Different spins on psychological impact. Worth a watch.
