Catherine involves the peasants, nobles and merchants in a conference designed to bring change to Russia. Peter's hunt for revenge on an historic enemy threatens to destabilize Catherine's attempt to outlaw murder.
We keep waiting for Catherine to unleash her enlightened agenda on Russia and it keeps falling flat. Even Voltaire is just sitting there criticizing!
I absolutely agree with Fanning's shift when hearing what happened to Peter, it was incredible. It felt so genuine you almost wonder if that line was hidden from her to gather her surprise (highly unlikely given how tv shows work). It was just that incredible.

Fanning is fantastic, but can we also give it up for Belinda Bromilow's little "let's all remember not to murder" dance? All it needed was pom-poms. D! O! N! T! M-U-R! D-E-R!
And speaking of murder, let's bring it in for a huddle, team. Listen, everyone, I just want to say: good job-- no, great job-- on this week's murder. It had pathos, it had motivation, it had bloody gurgling, it left a satisfying corpse, but most importantly you know what it had? Comradery. It's teamwork that makes the dream work, crew, and when we're all on the same shot, stabbed, skull-crushing page, nothing can stand in our way.

The least believable part of this episode is that with the long list of people he'd wronged, Simitz somehow didn't do anything to Marial to have her after his head.
