[TRAILER] A teenager stumbles upon a magical app that causes his social media updates to come true. No really: that's the plot and millions of dollars were spent to make this. Is it a tax dodge? A dominatrix flexing her control of a studio exec? I honestly do not know.
Starring Ross Lynch, Olivia Holt, Harvey Guillén, Gregg Sulkin, Courtney Eaton, Rob Riggle, John Michael Higgins, as well as Famke Janssen and Martin Donovan, who apparently murdered someone and the producers of this film have it on film.
"Directed" by Scott Speer. "Written" by Jason Filardi.
0% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Widely available streaming for masochists. JustWatch.

They also bring back the 80s teen comedy thing where every "teen" is clearly at least 25 years old.

And while I am assured Ross Lynch is/was some kind of teen star, damned if he doesn't look like Kidz Bop's version of Evan Peters.

Right, isn’t this just Stephen King’s “Word Processor of the Gods”? I think that was made into part of Creepshow or some other anthology series

Martin Donovan went full, mask-off antivax this year. Looks like it may have affected his career!

Aw, I really like Harvey Guillén, that's too bad. At least he got a paycheck (I hope.)
Looks like the director's niche is largely music videos, and Step Up sequels. He also bears a resemblance to John Krasinski, especially if you squint. This article about him was disturbing.

Aw man, he was on my That Guy list of character actors I like. I liked him in Weeds.
On the other hand, he doesn't not look like he'd go for something like that.

Imagine the most basic-ass aging Gen X writer. He's had a bad divorce. He's drinking a lot. He's watching D-level 80s teen comedies like Lover Boy or The Invisible Kid and he thinks to himself: Bro, if I just update the pop culture references here to whatever the fuck my stepkids are into, THIS IS GOLD.
"All I need to do is update the whole concept of the unintended consequence of the magical wish and I can get the fuck out of Hollywood forever!"
[the middle finger of the monkey's paw uncurls]
A dominatrix flexing her control of a studio exec?
See, I'd watch that. Call it Bowfinger II: Finger Harder.

....So, I can't find any evidence of this claim, not even on the Wikipedia pages for Martin Donovan or for the film itself. Are you sure about this?

I was proposing the two of them having committed a murder which the producers of this film have on video as a more plausible explanation for why they signed on for their (small, insulting, corny-as-hell) roles than "they read the script and it seemed good" or "this seemed good for their careers."
I'm not really being serious. I'm just using hyperbole to express how bizarre it is to see those two in something so beneath them.
It was a joke.
