Holy shit, overtime.

My son asked what if nobody's won this super bowl by the time the next super bowl happens because the overtime lasts for a full year and I told him then four teams will all be on the field in next year's super bowl and any one of them could win but the Chiefs and 49ers will likely be pretty tired by then. So that's how the conversation is going chez potrzebie

Really pushing that Mahomes narrative in the commentary.

Not sure he lived up to any hype tonight, he was perfectly adequate when it counted.

Glad to see a game that wasn't a total bore.

Also, if you played the Taylor Swift drinking game, I hope you had a strong liver!

I’m no fan of dynasties, but that will make my Swiftie daughters happy, so that makes me happy. And I guess there’s someone else it’ll really piss off, so that’s cool too.

It's funny my friends don't follow football we're saying how boring it was, those who were football fans just not of the two teams were saying how.it was one of the best super bowls they've seen. It suuuuucks but man what a game

Gotta feel for Jake Moody.
Set a Super Bowl record 55 yard field goal and then Butker comes along and makes a 57 yarder.

As a long time denizen of KC who emigrated to SF, I don't know how to process "actually the Chiefs are good now."

Paramount Plus had a major fail last night; dropping out frequently or not loading at all for many users during the first hour of the game. Paramount's site was showing me either error messages or an old CBS news interview with 2 politicians eating French fries (wtf?). Social media was full of complaints about the app not working, while Paramount folks said nothing. You'd think this would be a bigger story (Daily Mail, sorry) since exclusive playoff game deals with specific streamers [WSJ gift link] are now going to be a regular feature of the NFL:

Amazon will stream its first-ever National Football League playoff game next season exclusively on its Prime Video service, people familiar with the matter said. Last month, NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service had an exclusive playoff NFL game, which drew 23 million viewers and accounted for 30% of web traffic, making it the most streamed U.S. event ever.

Amazon had been offered the playoff game this season, but passed. NBCU, a unit of Comcast, snagged the rights to it in a deal valued at least $110 million. NBCU sought to keep the streaming-only playoff game next season, but Amazon had a clause as part of its deal to stream the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” that allowed it to claim the game, one of the people said.

I expected Mahomes to roll right over Purdy, specifically because he's so young that I didn't expect him to have any poise or cool in the final minutes.

I cheerfully eat my words right here: Purdy stood tall and did his job right until the end, regardless of his age. The Kids Are All Right.

I'm sure he's thinking about the PAT a lot more than than a kick that is approaching routine with today's place-kickers.

Agreed! It got better as it went on - Usher’s voice warmed up - and the roller skates! So impressive. I was surprised to find I could sing along to every song. I was very excited when Ludacris showed up. I don’t know much about H.E.R. but she killed it.

H.E.R. has a long-time connection to the Niners.

I live in the Bay Area now, but my allegiance will always be with East Coast teams - grew up in the shadow of the "good" Washington [football team name] (they won their first Super Bowl during my junior year in high school), remember when the Colts were in Baltimore, and spent a few years living near Philly. None of 'my' teams made it to the big game this year, so I had no dogs in the race and could just enjoy the game for the exciting back-and-forth nail biter that it was.

first time I watched a Super Bowl game, it was fun

not as fun as this year's CFL Grey Cup game, but I'm used to that

I’m sure someone wittier than me has pointed out that Taylor Swift is now the exact type of person that was considered the antagonist of “You Belong To Me.”

Sleepily checking my Bluesky and Twitter feeds in the train on the way to work this morning.. Wow, that's a lot of Superbowl. Is that how the rest of the world feels during Eurovision?

That game certainly became a lot more interesting once Kansas City remembered they were a professional football team - then it become a rip snorter.

Still don't understand why Shanahan becomes so run adverse in his second half game plans. (I would assume it's partly defensive adjustment, but still CMC was ripping off runs in the 4th). Just like the Atl-NE overtime (also Shanahan), it felt inevitable to me that KC was going to win it.

Usher on skates was great. My wife near lost her mind when Luda showed up Still not nearly as good as Prince. I was also surprised that he didn't have a sweetening track (at least in the beginning) I didn't think the NFL let that happen these days.

Weirdly, the NFL appears to have 'corrected' Alicia Keyes's vocals from the beginning of her set

Is rollerskating making one of its periodic comebacks?
Some super impressive dance moves going on there.

I realize, of course, that I have reached a certain age that halftime shows are not 'for me" but I really wish the broadcasters would figure out some way to introduce or otherwise identify the surprise guests.
Other than "Hey, that's the guy from Fast and the Furious" most of the show was us going "Who is that guy? Why is this girl playing a guitar?".

Even if it isn't my music, it's still nice to be able to give credit to whomever is performing.

Guitar player was H.E.R. (and I agree with you)

And I don't think rollerskating ever really went away in the black community as a thing. One of LA's last big skating rinks , at least from a press angle, is kept alive by skating nights catering to the community

Do it like they do on the Bachelor and other reality shows with large casts, have little nametags pop up!

I thought that halftime show was just kind of a...buffet plate too full of everything. *shrug*

mafajab: ...I really wish the broadcasters would figure out some way to introduce or otherwise identify the surprise guests....

Our teen was able to identify a couple of the performers for me after the fact (she was at a watch party), so yeah, I agree. All those fancy-pants 3D graphics during the game, but nothing during the show?? Seems like a missed opportunity.

Re: halftime, I liked the beginning of the show that was obviously Vegas themed. Wish they had continued to incorporate that throughout the show and with the roller skating. Seemed like a missed opportunity for Blue Man Group or Cirque de Soleil.

Speaking of not recognizing people - I didn't really recognize any of the talking heads on CBS. I knew the guy on the far left must have won a Super bowl because he had a ring on. Granted, I'm only a casual viewer but I usually can pick out the big names. Even after ai saw their names pop up once I couldn't really place them. Were they second string announcers or has been viewing become a little too casual?

The amount of celebrity sightings in the ads was immense. And mostly rendered it all the same. Oh, they got Tom Brady? Who cares? This other commercial has Messi. The excess made it not even fun.

I suspect the broken monoculture thing has led to the proliferation of celebrities in Superbowl ads. It felt like there were so many ads contained a half-dozen very random celebrities, and that only makes sense to me if companies were nervous about hanging an ad around a face that most of the audience wouldn't recognize. So add a celebrity for another demographic, and another, and another...

Usher, baby. The dancing was great, but the medley included too many songs. 5 or 6 would've been better. (Since you asked: OMG, My Way, Confessions, Love in this Club, Yeah!) But I liked it, and if I'm entirely honest I have some wide-eyed, millennial glee that the Superbowl halftime show was a nostalgia act targeted at us. (Kind of? Usher spent enough time on the Voice that he built some goodwill with other generations, but I feel like we're all admitting this one was targeted directly at 35-50 year olds, yes?)

I don't care about football but wanted San Francisco to win. As the 49ers were winning for most of the match, I had a delightfully low-stress watching experience. (I don't know why people intentionally get involved in sports fandom; every time I watch too many Warriors games and they start losing, I'm plunged into the darkest depression. How do people do it!)

On a technical direction level, the halftime show was pretty remarkable — camera angles, dancers launching themselves into the frame at just the right time. I just didn't understand why the artists were all in the order they were in. The company known for building anticipation and then "one more thing!" ought to have a better handle on the production of a 15-minute showcase of music. It was distracting switching back and forth between performers, some of whom were in the spotlight for less than a minute.

Am I off-base? Did the sequencing of songs really build, and I'm too old to have noticed? Not trying to yuck anyone's yum, just bewildered.

Who are the Super Bowl 2024 commentators? Pregame, halftime, booth and field announcers

James Brown was the host with Phil Simms (two-time Super Bowl champion Giants quarterback), Boomer Esiason (Super Bowl-losing Bengals QB), Nate Burleson (Vikings/Seahawks/Lions wide receiver), Bill Cowher (Super Bowl-winning Steelers coach) and JJ Watt (Texans/Cardinals defensive end).
