April Movie Pick

I'm thinking Twelfth Night, so that Midsummer Night's Dream can be done in July. Or As You Like It?

For Twelfth Night: The 1996 version seems available in many formats and many places.
Orson Welles did one in 1933 but may not be the best as it was a recording of a production. May also be hard to find.
For British TV productions, KB did one in 1988 for TV that may be available with some digging, as well as a version from 1970 (with Alex Guinness) which is rumored to be available on YouTube.
1997 Lincoln Center performance probably has old DVDs around for borrow.
All Male production from 2012? This one I may dig around for since it has Mark Rylance and Stephen Fry.

For As You Like It: KB did a movie version in 2006 that is available all over the place.
National Theatre version? could be good? Is probably streaming someplace or available through local libraries.
Olivier's 1936 movie? I do love an old movie now and then and haven't watched one of his in ages.

KB=Kenneth Branagh

Stephen Fry as Malvolio sounds amazing! I think that production gets my vote, if we're voting.

Branagh's As You Like It is a stinker, but why it doesn't work might make for interesting discussion.

Twelfth Night with Alec Guinness is on Amazon Prime. I liked it, but it pales next to a decent theatrical version.

As You Like It is one of my favorite plays, although my favorite is the ever problematic Taming of the Shrew. Whichever we land on, I'll make a post with the preferred version including how to watch it. Interlibrary Loan may be the only source for some of us.
Personally I would do a mix of film adaptations and "filmed in front of a live audience", be it BBC, RSC or Lincoln Center or what have you. Even wacky adaptations like Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet are entertaining.
I was thinking about posting "extra credit" films each month, like Scotland, PA or 10 Things I Hate About You for whoever might have an inclination to watch a more liberal adaptation of the source material. So many of them are good on their own!

Ok, after looking and looking around I think the Mark Rylance/Stephen Fry Twelfth Night will be our April movie. It seems to be very widely available via a couple of different channels and some of them are free.

I will probably pay $$ to watch the National Theatre version of As You Like It because I really want to watch it but it's only available direct from the NTA.
