Mary is a good Christian girl who goes to a good Christian high school where she has good Christian friends and a perfect Christian boyfriend. Her life seems perfect, until the day that she finds out that her boyfriend may be gay – and that she's pregnant.

“Are you sure this isn’t a sin?”

I gotta revisit this, I remember loving this when it came out but haven't seen it in a long time.

I've never seen it, but I remember a clip going around with Mandy Moore rage screaming at someone, "I AM FILLED WITH CHRIST'S LOVE!!!"

It strikes me that Marjorie Taylor Greene probably rage screams that a lot, too.

“Lay off the tiara, Tia!”

I hadn’t watched this in a long time. Still light and enjoyable.

I really did like this movie. Macaulay Culkin was great in it, as was Eva Amurri.

I love this movie. I didn't go to that sort of school but grew up around a lot of them so I'm somewhat familiar with the tropes and they did a good job. And the soundtrack! Some Mandy Moore of course (with a Michael Stipe duet on "God Only Knows"). The "Christian" music playing at the prom was actually The Replacements. It's great.

This seems to have turned into my comfort movie, and I’ve taken to turning it on when the stuff on my to-watch list feels too heavy. More observations!

* Mary’s tee shirt from the gun range reads “Emmanuel Gun Range: an eye for an eye.”
* Hilary Faye scraping Cassandra’s bumper sticker tells us a lot about her - she’s vindictive, judgmental, and convinced that sinners do not merit respect. She’s also cool with vandalism.
* The sex ed class must have been incredibly superficial
* Mary’s mom gets wrong a super easy Bible trivia question, about a well-known Old Testament parent willing to sacrifice a child for god. That really sets up a theme …
* Poor Tia
* Poor Mary, so scared that she’d rather have cancer than be pregnant
* The prayer circle that HF organizes to “help” Dean is just ewww
* HF is definitely leveraging her role as her brothers helper for martyrdom, but also - how the hell is it that Cassandra is the first one to think of making a car accessible for him? It stands out as a loving gesture. And what the hell are their parents, clearly well-off, doing putting Roland at HF’s mercy?
* The scene where Mary stands in front of the Jesus billboard and utters her first “swears.”
* “Prayer works, it’s been medically proven!”
* HF is so quick to kick Mary out of the Christian Jewels. After a conversation of less than one minute, she’s taking back the pin.
* I wonder how many examples there are in this film of people being “guided” by Jesus to do the things they want to do.
* HF: Without the strength and love that Jesus provides me, do you really think Cassandra’s gonna be able to take care of him?
Veronica: No way
HF: She’s just gonna end up hurting him.
Tia: By the look of the bruises on his neck, she already has.

* Pastor Skip outsourcing his concerns for Mary to her peers. Ugh.
* PS: She’s part of your posse, and I think you could help her. I’m gonna need you to be a warrior on the front lines for Jesus.
Tia: You mean, like shoot her.

* The exorcism scene - I can see how it’s funny but it really wigs me out a bit. I was never the subject of an exorcism attempt but I was super careful.
* Patrick is so decent. Smart too. Mercy House isn’t really for the people who are sent there, it’s more for those who do the sending (paraphrasing).
* The Beatitudes voice over with Mary in the bathroom stall.
* I really would not want to piss off Cassandra (and I was the kind of kid who would have pissed her off) but she’s a heck of a friend
* (Mary, Cassandra and Roland ditching school)
Mary to Roland: Should you be driving?
Roland: What the hell is it with you people, you think I can’t do anything.
Mary: Do you have your license?
Roland: No

* Patrick just moved to town, how does he know about secret storage rooms at the mall?
* The Xmas story parallel
* For some reason I didn’t really clock that Skip is married. So his involvement with Lillian is problematic.

Out of steam. Might post observations for the rest of it later, I don’t know.
