In this musical comedy, Valerie is dealing with her philandering fiancé, Ted, when she finds that a trio of aliens have crashed their spaceship into her swimming pool. Once the furry beings are shaved at her girlfriend's salon, the women discover three handsome men underneath. After absorbing the native culture via television, the spacemen are ready to hit the dating scene in 1980s Los Angeles.

Trailer. I don't think there is really another movie quite like this one.

I watched this a bunch of times when I was a kid, because somehow in my environment it ended up being a bit of a favourite amongst preteens? We even watched it at school once during some break or another. I should check it out again, but it'll be a very weird viewing experience, I'm sure.

This is the movie I bring up when someone asks if any Manic Pixie Dream Guy films exist.

Also, looking back how talent stacked was that cast?

Geena Davis as Valerie Gail
Jeff Goldblum as Mac
Jim Carrey as Wiploc
Damon Wayans as Zeebo
Julie Brown as Candy Pink
Michael McKean as Woodya

I’d never seen this before and it was so much fun.

There were plans to make it into a musical, but it didn’t work out. Here’s Kristin Chenoweth in rehearsal as Valerie.

After this, Julien Temple made:
-a crime movie with Tupac & Mickey Rourke
-a drama about Samuel Taylor Coleridge
-a drama about Jean Vigo

...and then went back to exclusively music videos/concert films/docs.

Speaking of the Ted character, I had a "Whatever happened to Charles Rocket?" moment and Googled it.

Don't do that. TW: suicide, grim.

I have never seen this movie, but when it came out my high school religion teacher told us all to go see it because she so proud that one of her former students -- Jim Carrey -- was in this movie. According to her, she knew he had finally made it big because of this movie.

I have an unreasonable fondness for this movie.

at the end Valerie tells Wiploc she'll miss him the least....and only gives him a cheek kiss when he asks for a liplock. Makes me wonder how Jim Carrey was acting during production....

So does it hold up, or is it problematic in the same way so many of its peers are? I don't remember the last time I watched it, but my schoolboy crush on Geena Davis meant I've seen it at least a few times.

I never saw the movie, but my brother had the album it was based on by Julie Brown. "Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun" has not aged well.

That's of course a reference to the Wizard of Oz . On the subject of scifi comedy, Charles Rocket stared in a failed pilot for a Star Trek parody called Star Patrol!, directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Paging Dr Love!
It was this movie that taught Gen X to swoon over Jeff Goldbloom, long before his leather jacket Jurassic Park role. Such a glow up.
Geena Davis was luminous.
I assume that this movie is set in the same California as Clueless, Valley Girl, and the Buffy movie.

I watched this for the first time a couple nights ago, because of this thread. Way more fun than I expected!
