Kaiser Karl: Becoming Karl Lagerfeld - season 1
June 15, 2024 10:54 AM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

An origin story spanning the era before he became head designer at Chanel. In 1972 Karl is a social butterfly and freelance designer in Paris, picking up work for Fendi and Chloé and navigating the “nest of vipers” that is the 1970s fashion industry.

As well as having grand ambitions for himself, he has a bitter rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois), made all the more complicated by their competing affection for the dashing young writer Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin).

Watch it in French if you can handle the subtitles.

There's much to enjoy. Even when one's not gay or not into fashion. Like me.

Some examples.

Watching this I realised: the fashion of my youth has become period costume.
A strange idea. Back then I didn't like the hairspray men's hairdo. Like Yves Saint Laurents 70s big hair.
But now I enjoy the spectacle with the detachement of viewing a baroque royal courtiers towering peruque.

I enjoyed small details like Jacques zooming through Paris on a Solex moped.

The narrative that doesn't easily fit into stereotypes. The promiscuous Jacques bonding with the asexual Lagerfeld.
Lagerfeld in competition with Yves Saint Laurent. But also sharing an old friendship. Lagerfeld negotiating strongly with Chloé founder but also collaborating with her. Lagerfeld is very affluent but still looking whistfully at Yves Saint Laurent being an icon. Lagerfeld is a ruthless negotiator, but also living with his mother.

And then the dialogue is not only in French. But also in German and Italian.
It's like a summer holiday.

I'll watch anything with Théodore Pellerin. Everything he does is perfection. That's it.
