Two out of five stars.

Component scorecard:

Direction - Better than last time, but nothing to get too excited about
Cast - Meh. But Shawnee Smith is back
Kills - better than last time. I particularly liked the breathe and you die machine
Jigsaw - still dead but regularly seen via flashback, as is Shawnee Smith now
Morality rating - big fat zero as Jigsaw's games require the players to "learn lessons" based on killing innocent people
Villain situation - I am increasingly unconvinced Hoffman is up for this engineering challenge
Mythology - Jigsaw planned all of this, too, and his wife kinda knew

One of the worst scripts, some of the most pointless mythology and muddiest moral underpinnings. But the kills and direction are better, keeping it from being a total disaster.

Also: lol about Jigsaw's nü metal soul patch.

Fun fact about this film: Tanedra Howard, best known for this and Saw 3D, won her role in this movie. The role was the prize for the first season of the reality tv competition Scream Queens hosted by James Gunn.
