Those About to Die: Episodes 5-10 "Betrayal" to "Let the Games Begin"
August 28, 2024 2:32 AM - Season 1, Episode 5 - Subscribe

Titus rehabilitates his image; Tenax's past is revealed; Kwame prepares for his fight with Flamma.

I'm doing one post for the rest of the first season as there wasn't much commenting on the last.

I enjoyed this series. Solidly entertaining, with enough twists and turns for the fictional characters to make up for knowing who the Emperor would be.

It was a bit brutal to a couple of the fictional characters, but I think it would have felt disappointingly saccharine to have happy endings for everyone in a series about how brutal Ancient Rome could be.

There's no official world yet on whether there will be a Season 2 as far as I know.

Historical accuracy.

There were things I liked about it but I, Claudius or Rome it certainly wasn't. Hell, it wasn't even the 2010 Spartacus*.

Most of my entertainment watching it came from:

1. Every time there was a panoramic shot of the city that appeared to come directly from a 2002 CD-ROM game.

2. Every scene in which Titus pondered whether he could trust Domitian while Domitian did his absolute best to convey that he was scheming evil schemes with his bonkers facial expressions.

* Set a show in ancient Rome and I will probably watch it well past the point that I know I should stop.
