Watched it while I was getting ready for work on Monday. It seems to me that this is the mob movie that the filmmakers very clearly wanted to make instead of a Batman movie. Colin Farrell still does the ridiculous accent, but it's hard not to get sucked in anyway because he's just really going for it from minute one to the end of the ep. Major props to Cristin Milioti for being a really good, scary foe! Hadn't seen this side of her before in the few things I've watched with her in them. I feel like the kid was kind of added as an afterthought.

I’m a huge fan of the old mob movies, Goodfellas being my favourite, and this really captures the quotidian feeling of them.

I loved that Victor was introduced by recycling how Batman first meets Jason Todd in the comics, and wonder how they plan to shoehorn "The Hangman" into the plot - why reference The Long Halloween if you can't do it justice? Just give Sofia Falcone a different moniker.

Eager for more though, the Year One/early Batman era is my favourite aside from Scott Snyder's New 52 run.

I'm really into the show.

The tone of the show can be uneven at times, but the performances of Colin Ferrell and Cristin Milioti are totally blowing my hair back. I have complete faith that they are going to fully flesh out the pathologies driving those characters.

Also, I think Colin Ferrell is doing a spot-on impression of Vito Spatafore's walk.

If you're enjoying this, you might want to keep an eye out for the collected volume of Tom King's just-concluded Penguin series for the comics. It has a similar take on the character but is rather better than this first episode suggests the TV show is going to be.

So for someone who is a big Batman fan, but is pretty sick and tired of gangster shows, this show would be a pass?

Nice music cues: Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, and When In Rome’s The Promise.

I went looking for Cristin Milioti conversation, and I spotted this on Reddit:
> "Kids did I ever tell you about the time your mother became the biggest crime lord of Gotham?"

The “coming up this season” and behind the scenes after the show had Colin Farrell in an interesting headband. Maybe it's the juxtaposition.

I'll point out, The Kingpin is a Marvel character, not DC.

I think it would be a pass for you, yeah. They've confirmed there will be no Batman or Bruce Wayne in the show, and based on the first episode it is very much a mobster show with no outward "comic-booky" elements.

I'd just add that it's a mobster show where the two main mob characters clearly have mental illness/trauma. There is a lot that reminds you of other mob things, but it feels a bit more Todd Phillips/Joker territory. Or rather Matt Reeves/The Batman territory I guess.
