Caddo Lake (2024)
October 14, 2024 3:31 PM - Subscribe

A bereaved son and a troubled teenager investigate a series of mysterious happenings on the eponymous, swampy Texan lake in this thriller currently streaming on Max. The trailer gives little away, which is probably for the best.

This is the second feature from director/writer team Logan George and Celine Held, after poverty drama Topside (2020); M. Night Shyamalan has a producing credit. Reviews have been generally positive, with a 79% tomatometer score.

I really do think it's best to go into this one blind, which makes it difficult to recommend to people who like a specific type of movie without giving away too much about the type of movie this turns out to be. But personally I thought it had strong acting and an intriguing plot, along with lots of well-shot footage of the swamp.

I thought this movie was clever and enjoyable. Do go in cold - part of the fun is working out what's going on.

This wasn’t at all what I expected. I think I would have liked it more if I hadn’t seen (and loved) the series this was blatantly, directly ripped off from.

Strong performances, though.

Just watched this on y'all's recommendations and I loved it. Definitely agree with going in blind and yes, it does bear a striking resemblence to a certain Netflix series. Once I realized that, it kind of made it even more fun to see how they'd wind this up and I'm happy to say I think it, too, stuck the landing.

I enjoyed this. It does remind me of the other thing, but that's just a point of plot mechanics. The thematic stuff and characters were entirely different. I also appreciated that this resolved in 100 minutes when this permutation of this story could easily have been stretched to be a series.

I really enjoyed this. Great acting and a nice sense of place. Nothing too gross or scary for the average person either. As a Southerner it’s also nice to see a realistic depiction of Southerners as just as smart and diverse as anyone else. Messy family dynamics that were a bit close to home in places.

Eliza Scanlen is fucking great. Strong female lead, not sexualized or ever remarked on in the film as unusual in being the hero.

This was such a better, more lived-in version of swamp/wetland communities than the glossy postcard-isms of Where the Crawdads Sing.

This was pretty good. Great performances and a very real location. I have apparently watched too many movies like this (I have not watched the Netflix show everyone speaks of) because I called all the weird plot points long before they were revealed. But that didn't ruin anything! The "how" of how everything played out was still well-done and satisfying. Oddly, the plot matched up with Time Addicts, which I watched the night before. Very deja vu.
